Hello, new member here,

I'm just starting out, but I want to be able to do this thing properly. I don't really know much about rugs (I know about what types of rugs do what, just not so much branding).

I was wondering, what are the major brands at the moment for horse rugs (who can I trust), and which retailers are good for buying horse rugs (good quality/range etc.)

Thank you in advance!

I've bought from Hope Valley Saddlery, Equestrian Clearance, Rideaway and also Robinsons and had good service.

RE brands, for narrow shouldered horses I like Bucas and Horseware (Rambo, rhino, 1200d Amigo) but my chunkier shouldered horse had some love Shires rugs (Stormbreaker, Stormcheeta and Typhoon). Bucas and Horseware do 'big shouldered' and XL rangers for chunkier types but I never tried them.

I had a Weatherbeeta 1200d rug which was very nice quality, but it's shape didn't suit any of my horses, so I sold it.

ETA - I always try to buy them in the sales. Sometimes you can get good deals on last years colour.

I have a chunkier shouldered boy. I always buy rugs with shouler gussets and deep cut, some rugs such as weatherbeeta genero and amigo dont have shoulder gussets to aid movement. If they dont have gussets he bursts them. Also, pay attention to wheather rug has straps and buckle at front fastening or is it the 2 clip option.

I love Premier Equine rugs. They are deeper cut at the shoulders to prevent rubbing. If he does rub i put on a lycra half body to cover his shoulders under rug.

Ive also used weatherbeeta in past too. Also pay attention to the denier of the rug, e.g. 600d, 1000d, 1200d or 1680d. This is the thickness of the material. It also can create warmth due to it heaviness and the higher the denier the harder it is to rip in field. I have a 100g polyfil 1000d rug and a 100g polyfill 1680d rug and the latter is much heavier and so warmer.

Yeah try go with the sales or buy outwith season, e.g. buy summer rugs in winter etc. Premer Equine have a faceboook page "premier equine international" and put deals on daily. Then go to their website to buy.

I have bought from Equestrian clearance, the saddlery shop (the one at rowallan) and premier equine. Go outdoors sometimes have some good dedals too if an emergency.

Premier equine are great and super service. I usually also get last years colours via hope valley or equestrian clearance. Bough a Hoss uk rug at your horse last year and after its first wash the filling has gone flat and the Velcro on the neck has completely gone so the neck opens up. Quite annoyed as this was sold as the next best thing to premier equine - I think not! Masta avante are a good budget rug for non rug rippers
