I really need a bit of help, I have 2 youngsters that I am bringing on but I would ideally like some help with them, but its trying to find someone confident and honest that can give me a hand that isn't going to try and take over.

They would be responsible for training and bringing on one of them, with hardly any outlay, just how do I find them in the first place?

I hope someone can help.....

To be honest I think you would really struggle.
Backing and bringing on youngsters isn't usually something people want to do for fun, its something people normally get paid for.
It can be time consuming and a lot of hard work and has its risks, and where is the reward if you dont own the youngster?
Until earlier in the month, I had 2 youngsters myself and I came to realise that I wasn't going to get consistent help unless I paid, so I sold one and now just have to concentrate on working with one.

You may get someone though, good luck! :D

I think you will struggle too. If you are lucky enough to find someone, they may not do things the way you want them done. If I were you I would pay out for some professional help and it will pay off in the meantime.

^^^This I'm afraid.

I would be surprised if you could find someone. When you say, "bring on your youngster" what exactly do you mean? If it is backing etc, it is something which as MissyMe said, people will charge for - especially given that you need a certain someone to do the backing as left in the wrong hands it can go very wrong.

I was in a similar situation and I ended up selling all mine but one; I don't have a lot of me time, but I now have 1 horse who I am having fun devoting all my time to and teaching him the basics of lunging, long reining etc before I hand him over to my YO at beginning of March who will ride him away and begin his schooling.

That said, I hope you can prove me wrong and find a capable someone who will help :D

I guess it is a bit of a hard one, I helped a friend with 2 younsters back in 2008 and my return for it was satisfying knowing that I had helped, however I did get paid at the weekends for any weddings I did with her 2 older horses but that was just for the days work.

I would basically offer them the chance to bring on the horse as they wished, and would teach them how to drive and give riding lessons, I am experienced at bringing on horses myself but would like to find someone that would basically like to take on one of them, take them to shows and generally gain experience and the opportunity of pretty much owning there own horse without the costs.

Maybe I need to find a student or someone that has a very good general knowledge of caring for horses and riding and would like a chance to prove themselves. (This is how I started out)

Does anyone know of anybody in Devon that is looking for this sort of opportunity?

I have long reined, lunged, backed etc myself all they need now is someone confident to ride one and bring on slowly whilst I concentrate on the other, they have a choice of which one they can ride as well as I am not fussy I love both my horses dearly but its hard to find that one person with the right mental attitude these are my first 2 horses and they are really special to me.

They also are a bit of a rarity in Devon as they are both 16.1+ well bred Palaminoes and believe they are going to be quiet something when they are a little older!

Well you did it yourself for someone else so you may find someone.
Try advertising locally, in tack shops etc, or if you have a local horse mag try that.
I think those skilled enough to bring a youngster on probably wouldn't do someone elses unless they just couldn't afford their own horse at present.
What I think you're likely to get is teenagers applying, and where I agree some teenagers are extremely confident and competent, you would be more likely to get ones that just want to be around horses and wont have the necessary skills, although they could work under your guidance.
With having youngsters myself, I know how unpredictable they can being whilst undergoing training, so I personally think teenagers are a no no in case the kids get injured.
So if you're back to adults, they tend to not want to risk their necks on youngsters as they've families etc, or will only do so on their own youngsters.

I'll be honest, I wouldn't ask anyone to risk their necks on one of my youngsters unless they did it for a living, were getting paid and had relevant insurance.
Fact is, bringing on youngsters is a risk, they can go from going forward fine to explosive in a split second and in that split second anything can happen x
