Does anyone else find odd stuff in their baled haylage? We seem to have had a run of it just at the moment.

So far I've found....
A chewed up frizbee that must have got caught in the baler
The wing bones of a large-ish bird (Yuk!)
A rubber ball - or rather what was left of it.
A chunk of 4 x 4 timber. (Not the car!)

And that is just in this load of 5 bales.

We normally get topscore haylite and haven't found anything more than the odd stone before now. But we couldn't get it when our local supplier ran out before Christmas and got 5 bales of Haylean instead. (One of which had been punctured -got wet all the way through and had to go back.)

Is all this rubbish normal?

haylite haylean? ya what?! LOL

Its all haylage, all come off a field with stuff in the field that nice people kindly drop. Year back we had a run of snakes in the the bales.

We find cans, clothes, toys, dead stuff. its like a big treaure hunt lol

Hello,

I learned that carrion in haylage can be a breeding
ground for toxins like botulinum, so I would be
concerned about finding animal parts in haylage.

Hope this helps -- dene

My local farmer really p******d off the 'locals' (ex-townies more like) in our village a couple of years ago when he banned people from walking their dogs in the fields for just this reason (plus the fact that there'd been another F+M scare locally). I've had balls and dog toys in my hay. I'm afraid that until people have respect for other people's property this sort of thing will continue to happen. (Rant).

Found a dried up mouse once in a bag of Horsehage, Frankie had eaten around it. I thought there was something odd when I saw a large mouthful left in his net.

Now on haylage from the farm and find huge bits of wood on a regular basis but not much else so i guess not many walkers where they are cropping.

GOSH - I feel lucky I've never found anything more than a stone but maybe that's because I am in Devon and my farmer doesn't have lots of people walking across the fields??

i got a big ish rat throw the baler many years ago when baling small bales of straw, was told a while after by the customer that his wife when shelping stack the bales that she nearly had a fit when she picked it up and saw it sticking out

I once found a metal disc with hole in the middle, about the size of a CD, something off a power tool but not sure what one!

I hope to god I never find a snake, I may run a mile or 10!
