I am hoping on getting a Finnish Lapphund next year. As far as I can make out they are excellent with children, good with other animals, dont mind being left alone, are very intelligent, like lots of excercise and are good family dogs. However, I dont know anybody that has got one so dont have any personal experience of the breed. I was wondering if anybody on here had one and whether they could let me know what they are like. I did initially want a gordon setter but they are quite hard work to train and OH wasnt keen but he really wants one of these and they do sound perfect!

Lovely dogs ! - excellent temperaments and a sensible attitude to life - however they do shed tons as they have a thick double coat and are a spitz breed so have a marked tendency to bark if this is not checked early on. Look at the 'Elbereth' website - Toni Jackson has some stunning dogs and is a lovely lady always ready to help with advice about her breed - she is very particular about where her dogs end up though so be prepared for a grilling if you want one of hers

Other breeds you may consider are the Swedish Lapphund - very similar to the Finnish but a little shorter on the leg and only comes in solid black or brown or look at the Eurasier this is a new breed which comes in lots of lovely colours and has been developed to be placid, even tempered and not to bark unnecessarily - look at the Albion or Choaspitz sites for pics of these dogs and more info.
