i absolutly enjoy hunting one of my fave things to do on horse back :) x

I went out with Cheshire Bloodhounds yesterday too, first time out hunting and it was fab :) I don't have a TB though, just a little bay welsh cob :P She absolutely oved it bless her, I had some brake issues, she insisted on flat out gallop when everyone else was having a leisurely canter!! lol. But luckily she's safe and sturdy so didn't matter too much.

J 's just started going his fifth day is on Wednesday.
He's been pretty good the impressive turn of speed makes staying at the back impossible he stands ok and is great with the hounds .
Had a bad moment when we got overtaken by a bolting horse but he came back after three strides and was very good considering.
I took him in the school on saturday and he was oh must we he normally loves schooling I have also done two of those ( not for )pleasure rides with small jumps 17.2 of fit TB galloping in a group jumping very small logs ,scary stuff, much more concerning than hunting.

If I took my ex-racer hunting, then my report about the day would be written via a medium from beyond the grave... I will gladly hire him to anyone who is bored of being alive & who doesn't mind a messy end...

Well I think most horses could make good hunters if you take your time and do it correctly, I agree its not a TB thing…. But if you set them up and train them for hunting then you COULD have a good hunter.

I never thought 3 years ago I would hunt mine as he used to tank off on a hack even if the other horse was in a walk slightly infront. and I have come off him dozens of times due to him galloping off because he was in racehorse mode…

But this past year I decided no enough was enough id like to give hunting ago…. So I asked a bunch of friends a group of 7/8 of us every weekend to replicate hunting get my horse fit and teach him that just because hes behind others it doesn’t mean tank to the front like a crazy horse…. Eventually after a lot of hard work sweat and tears he will now be way at the back behind 50 horses and not flinch or stride from the canter to bomb to the front….

Although ou fave place to be is middle/up front as some horses are to slow for us now that we both have the confidence and I trust him completly. Sunday was a big test for me as I was on my own no friends and marley didn’t know any of ther horses, but he was a complete gent!

I just think if you give the horse the right education and training to hunting most horses can and will make a good hunter… I do still agree that some horses cant leave a dressage arena because of their temperaments…. But I just wanted everyone to know who has a ex racehorse that its not all doom and gloom you can retrain them to do anything you want :D

You just have to be considerate of their nature as individuals and learn wheres best to be for your horse etc… like mine doesn’t like standing in line for a jump he goes backwards so I either walk in a circle or try and jump first from a canter!

im not saying take them straight away... give them the correct training then try the fun rides through the summer with the hunts then try an autumn hunt start slow, your horses could suprise you... thats all i am saying... i still agree not ALL horses are cut out for hutning but the majority given the correct training i think could go round safley....

Obviously if hunting is not what you call fun then fair enough... this post was meant for people that like hunting and would like to eventually take there TB's that there can be a light at the end of the tunel... i never thought i could and i have and succeeded ....

i wasnt meant to cause any type of argument about you all taking your TBs out but if your interested in hunting find it fun and not sure if to take your TBs then give it the training and take it out :) thats all!

thank you swirlymurphy, i just wanted to give those wanted to hunt there failed racehorses a glimmer of hope.... i only started riding 3.5 years ago and bought him 3 years ago... retrained him myself long hard road and i have learnt a heck of a lot and its taking a lot of hard work and determination to be able to hunt him and him be such a gent!

i just wanted to let every one know it can be done if you put the work in are determined and have that certain trust and bond that you need. i love mine so much and i wouldnt give him up for the world! i trust him 100% and he trust me just the same (well minus the hedge he wanted me to check out first!)

Lovely photos, such a good boy, can I ask what his breeding is? He looks like the spitting image of my boy (who I will NOT be taking hunting!) ;)

Very much looking forward to taking my TB mare out hunting this season, I hope we have as mush fun as you guys.

i guess..................

its great you and your boy are enjoying hunting, but its like anything-horses for courses.

nothing to do with training, some just arent *the right sort*.

in the same way your chap, lovely as he is, probably wont make a GP dressage horse, mine will never in a hundred million years make a hunter, no matter how well trained he is or how bonded we are it just is not going to happen.
One of the best riders and *nagsmen* in the country who hunts young eventers for various people laughs off the idea of hunting mine, he will get on anything but even he accepts it would be smashed pelvis and broken legs time!

I have to agree with Prince33Sp4rkle - I don't feel any amount of training would ever get my TB hunting safely, it just blows his brains,as do fun rides and large group hacks. No amount of practice made it any better so in the end I gave up on fun rides and group hacks (two or three horses were fine). I tried hunting once - it was an experience never to be repeated- ever! People say that you have to try at least three times before deciding whether they are going to make it or not, I was told categorically never to try again and I have no desire to do so :) I just did other things instead... x

I have to agree here, I have 4 exracehorses who all hunt, never had a problem with them, but my IDxTB, who was bred to hunt, is a nightmare, her old owners, took her a few times, the first time she went over backwards, and the second time she ripped though a pair of gloves and skin of his hands, he did keep trying, but she got worse, I took her once after she had finished eventing and I only lasted one run, before I know she either kill me or both of us.my brother ID mare bolted the first time out, she did get better but anything upset her, she would bolt, the last time she went out she very nearly killed herself and my mum by bolting.
So it's not breed things, it's a brain thing, if you got a horse that can cope with it, good but not all horses can cope and not all horses get better the more they go out

Some horses makes hunters some don't no amount of training will make a horse that's too hot to hunt into a good hunter.
It takes a dozen days out minimum to know if you have a hunter some start well then loose it.
J is learning the job ATM he goes out with a nanny horse we are not there to canter about jump and enjoy ourselves we are there to teach him the job, by Christmas I should know if he will make a hunter or just a horse who can go hunting or perhaps a horse who is not improved by the experiance .
There's a subtle difference between a hunter and a horse that hunts , hunters are very very special people .

Another who would take umbrage with any horse can be trained to hunt...my old TB was taken, and hated it. He didn't even feel comfortable hacking in company, he'd get worried and stressed and it would lead to him tying up...there would just be no reason to put him through that.

Another one who has a hunting TB. Well did hunt before he broke but thats a different story!

He was in training and raced. He is not and never has been easy to handle but once hes out doing something he is fab.

I never had the bottle to jump anything of substance although he had the scope.

Not true unfortunately.

However, you two are having great fun, which is all that matters.

If I may, think about ditching the poly pad. The two of you will look much smarter with just the sheepskin, and it will be more comfortable for him too.

Well I think most horses could make good hunters if you take your time and do it correctly,

I happened to be discussing this with my trainer last night, and he said the complete opposite. Plenty of horses just can't cope (which as I found out on Saturday, my usually saintly mare is one of those). It's not all about training. My trainer was telling me about a horse that had won BYEH, so pretty well trained/trainable, but it was dangerous out hunting, so he advised the owners never to take it again.

I agree here- so much hard work put into controlling and channelling some TB's brains and energy in a different occupation that some of them 100% will not make hunters, regardless of how much you train and prepare them.

You could prepare and prepare some of them all you want, but one attempt out hunting could blow years of hard work and frazzle theit brains and leave someone injured.

You couldn't pay Al enough to take Reg or Smokey hunting. She loves it, nearly all her horses have hunted and she is paid to take out other horses and introduce them to hunting. But Reg is Mr Chilled. Hunting would not be good for helping him maintain that level of relaxed and well behaved- he has scars on his bottom from when he q'd for p2p and went backwards into a hedge. Smokes has hunted, but Al's spent all summer calming him down and making him think before he jumps... Hunting would rather defeat that work!
