My friend sent me this e-mail
On Tuesday night a group of careless and foolish yobs set off fireworks next to our horses and sheep. On this occasion none of them were hurt physically but I am sure they would have been mentally terrified.

Our dog was petrified and ran until he reached the A75 Castle Douglas road where he was hit and killed by oncoming traffic. Storm was always such an obedient dog and would always wait at the side of the road until any vehicles were past. He must have been so frightened and confused which led to this horrific accident. He will be greatly missed as he was a wonderful friend and companion to us all.

The following day we found one of the fireworks in the horse field which could so easily have hit the horses.

The thugs that killed our dog came back the following night to set off more fireworks. This time the police caught them in the act and charged one of the boys.

Fireworks should not be sold over the counter to anyone and should only be used at organised displays on bonfire night. Fireworks cause distress to animals and their owners and I think banning them is the only answer

I trawled through the Petition the PM--I know, I dont have much faith either, t

OMG - So sorry to hear that - that really is awful! Why can't the authorities just listen and at least restrict the use of fireworks!! They terrify my dog so much when walking at the mo I won't let him off as scared the same thing will happen! I am so sorry for you. xx

Sorry for 2 posts this went before I had finished

I trawled through the Petition the PM--I know, I dont have much faith either, the lobby from business is as strong as ours but:

This one has the best wording to fit what most of us want:

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Firework-abuse/

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to License the use of fireworks for public display only on recognised dates.
Every year countless pet and wild animals are killed owing to the random letting off of fireworks. Children, in the main, insist on annoying and terrifying elderly people and pets. There is no end to it and I ask the government to restrict the purchase and use of fireworks to public display only. I am not against fireworks but I am against their random 24/7 abuse

Agreed! They should be banned for the general public - only organised events should use them and only if they're away from animals!
I hate this time of year cos my dog hates fireworks and gets really wound up.
So sorry to hear about Storm, R.I.P.

The whole reason fireworks should ONLY BE AT GRGANISED EVENTS AND NOT SOLD TO GENERAL PUBLIC, I am really sorry for you loss

That is so sad. My sympathy and big hugs to your friend. Why, oh why, when Bonfire Night is 5th November (and there's only one of them per year that I'm aware of) do fireworks have to be sold weeks in advance. Putting them on sale ON 5th November should be enough. Firework "weeks in advance" is well underway here.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I sign petitions year after year, but the PM says there is no need for any further restrictions, which is so ignorant.
It is not as if we are calling for fireworks to be banned. Why can people not see the advantage of displays either. £5 to see £thousands worth of Fireworks, or £50 or more for ten minutes worth.
I will gladly sign again, maybe, just maybe, a PM will one day listen.

Last year i found our retired hunter with a broken leg in the field surrounded by firework debris. His leg was nearly severed because he had tried to continue running after it had broken. the blood trail was 300 yards long til he collapsed. I had to sit on his head sobbing my heart out to stop him trying to get up for an hour while the vet battled a dreadful traffic jam to put him down. He was so full of adrenalin that 3 lethal injections failed and the vets cant carry guns because of stupid restrictions on legal licensed gun ownership.

Fireworks are ok at proper events but when will the government get it into their thick heads that they are EXPLOSIVES we dont sell dynamite but can sell rockets- its nuts- in todays terrorist aware society have they not considered that a parked car + firework = car bomb?

Sorry crying too much to continue ranting x

So sorry to hear about your hunter, what a nightmare for you. Also so sad about OPs friends dog. Fireworks are so loud nowadays they are a nightmare. My old dog used to be absolutely petrified of fireworks - I really used to worry she would have a heart attack she got so scared. The trouble is no one bothers to enforce what regulations there are, think the only solution would be a total ban. What really annoys me is that our local countrywide store, whose customers are predominantly horse and dog owners, have now got fireworks on sale.
