Fireworks Petition

There's also a petition to ban private firework displays, because of the distress to pets

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Bonfires/

""Private firework displays should be banned as they are dangerous. The noise caused is very loud causing many animals and pets to become very distressed. Sometimes so distressed that it causes death. My family found our dog dead in the back garden. We was about to bring her in. She died of a heart attack because of the shock from the firework noises. People let of too many fireworks, the noise was really bad, and is only getting worse.

There should only be public displays. These are safer and more value for money.

Please sign this petition to help protect your pets.""

Totally with you on this, I love going to our local organised display, only costs a few ££ and they have great fireworks. But private displays - arrggghh! Why are the general public allowed to buy what are in essence explosives, it's insane.

Rant over.

Well I signed the petition and this was the utterly pathetic reply from the government:

'Some people have called for a ban on the sale of fireworks to the general public thereby restricting fireworks use to licensed fireworks displays. The Government does not believe a case has been made for such a measure. The proportion of fireworks used in relation to the injuries sustained does not, at present, justify a special regulation to ban fireworks use on safety grounds. Furthermore, there is the potential risk that a ban could lead to a black market in fireworks and could also encourage people to produce homemade devices. Whereas fireworks sold to the British public must comply with strict safety standards (BS 7114), fireworks sold on the black market or those that are homemade could lead to serious and even fatal accidents, which is currently not the norm. There have been no fatalities from the use of fireworks in the UK for more than 5 years.

When used sensibly and with consideration for others, fireworks are a very popular form of entertainment for the majority of the population. '

No mention of the terror caused to some animals at all.

There have been quite a few petitions, but the Government always gives a similar crap response. The horror stories I could tell of within two miles of my home, alone, makes it a major problem.
Just this week, in a village two miles from me, Police were called because small children were out throwing fireworks for a week. They raided a house and, under the floor boards, found and removed 250Kg of fireworks containing at least 50Kg of explosives.
