What possesses people to think they can hold a firework display in the middle of an area full of horses?? Got a month to try and stop it, the private school responsible are being very unapproachable.

This is a joke right....?

What gives you the right to stop them? sure, no horse owners love them but if you manage it then its fine!

We have fireworks displays actually on the yard

We stay with the horses, and they have their fireworx calmer. Honey flinches a bit but mysti watches them :D

It would be easier not to have them, but they do and we manage :)

Well I think to do fireworks near horses isn't fair on the horses. I have to youngsters and would not be happy if my YO decided to do fireworks near them.
You could try and contact the local council.

We have a firework display and bonfire every year at our yard. The only time we ever had any trouble with them was the year they were left in. They normally go outside, where they can see everything, and don't bother at all. The little pony stands and watches at the gate.

There is a wedding hotel just above us, so we get fireworks every Fri,Sat and Sun at 10pm from April to Oct. Nothing we have had has bothered. As I said, they're much better out in a safe field whre they can see what the noise is, and not panicing, shut in a stable.. Thats just my opinion though..

Where I used to livery there was a big display every year about 2 fields away. I was very worried the first year but I was assured that it would be fine by the other owners. I went along just before the start time and fully booted my mare (4 brushing boots and over-reach boots) and waited for the display to begin... well they had one small canter and then went back to grazing! I decided to stay till the end (just in case the horses got wound up ;) ) and enjoyed the fireworks. :D

Unfortunately not. Ok maybe not stop it, but tone it down, when you have 15 mins solid of professional standard fireworks NOT a couple of dads lighting a few sparklers in the back garden. The school playing field is neighboured by fields full of horses. Ok, the ones that were there last year survived but what about any new to the area? Personally I don't mind them in the right place but when they are cagey about it so you can't even make arrangements what are you supposed to do?

Think you need to get a bit of a grip.....! Horses will be fine, boot up if necessary but honestly they'll be fine. Its only one night a year, think how much the kids love firework displays, and your horses will be more bombproof for it.

We seem to be surrounded by fireworks around us. Its just one of those things an animal owner has to deal with.
I am fairly sure you have been to these sort of things before and someones horse will have been near by.
Deal with it sensibly, you have plenty of time to prepare. Decide whether horses will be better off in or out and keep an eye on them on the evening. Other than that enjoy them! I think you will be suprised how many horses are used to them without you realising.

It is obviously an annual event, and it doesnt sound like anything catastrophic has happened before, so I would try not to worry about it too much. It is not your right to ask them to tone it down.

There are also fireworks every weekend in the summer here in Italy near to my horses field, I take a cup of hot tea and sit in the field with the horses to make sure they are o.k. The foals twitch a bit but no more than that. As several others have said as long as they are out and they can see it doesn't usually bother them. Don't worry too much as I am sure it will be fine.:)

Thats what I thought the first time we had a bonfire. I begged everyone not to bring loud fireworks, and my husband's mates all brought top of the range stuff. It was like Afghanistan! I went running into the horse's field in a panic expecting them to be panicing... and I woke them up!! They were all dozing under a hedge, and were boggle eyed to see me run into the field in the middle of the night.

Don't worry!

This has been very interesting. As it happens my ponies are bombproof and I don't do anything different on bonfire night but others at the yard are. Maybe I didn't word the OP correctly but I thought this would be the one place I'd get a bit of help about who to approach. (Got volunteered by the yard as nobody else seems to use the internet). At least I get honest answers!!

bl00dy fireworks should be banned IMHO.....whats the point in them - so us selfish humans can see a pretty light go off in the sky...when you got thousands of animals scared *****less of them!! my old collie was very clever that she could open doors and got out on bonfire night once and she bolted and got hit by a train on nearby track all cos of stupid firworks!!

Had the opposite problem with my lab. - thinks its a gundog and tried to catch the one that went off sideways! Has to be shut inside due to mugging people for potato pie!

My horses were fine last year, left them happily in there stables. My dog on the other hand is so scard. He turns into a nervous wreck for ages and goes from a hyper dog to now leave his bed for days. But its only a few night and we keep him safe just part of life.

I'm not sure there is anyone to approach, you have to deal with it. :) If you're friends are worried, maybe they could chat with their vet about having some kind of sedation to hand if their horses get upset. But I honestly too think they are worrying too much.

Not all horses are the same? They might not all be fine. A friend of mine thought the same.. Thought that her horses would be fine, but no. The day after the fireworks display she had one less horse, because 1 of her ponies broke its leg and had to be pts, all because of being petrified of the fireworks.

I've never bothered being with mine on bonfire night - I'm sure half of the horses that run around only do it because their owners are there and expect it

You'd have a nervous breakdown  if you lived near Blackpool or Southport. They have both held world and European championships that have gone on for a whole weekend. They even had loud music as it was a musical display :).

I didn't see or hear them but I know my mates horses have survived to do it all again next year :D.

It is difficult though, for every person who says they'll be fine there's someone to say their horse was injured.

Most horses cope just fine, I have never had one freaked out by fireworks, a couple have been edgy to start with, but nothing major.
One thing though is being worried about the horses/dogs/cats etc, completely another is to demand a firework display to be cancelled/toned down.
Live and let live, horses need to adjust to modern world I'm afraid.

I don't object to fireworks and I have used them in past, but my neighbours (very rich-huge house, swimming pool, hot tubs etc) have a massive part every nov 5th and the don't buy normal fire works but send away for huge ones they land in other peoples gardens, fields even over the road (one rocket was as long as my riding whip) and it usually starts about 7-7.30ish and ends between 11 and midnight!

I really feel for people in this situation. Our (horsey) neighbours had fireworks once and all I could do was check my third party insurance. The police were sympathetic but nothing they could do. I was worried sick (I am a worrier) but to be honest now they just stand in the corner and watch. They have subsequently had llamas and potbellied pigs (not mine) escaping into field and been alarmed but safe. The point I'm trying to make is that the worst doesn't always happen. There is enough detail if you search H & H archives of horrendous outcomes but there are hundreds of thousands of OK outcomes too.
