As it is nearly bonfire night I am wondering whether to stable my horse or turn her out for the night as I have only had her two month I am not quite sure what to do any suggestions? In or out?
I always had conflicting advice! Some said leave out others said bring in so I decided to just carry on as every other night & bring in. Tbh he's not fussed by the fireworks though!!
I think it depends on the individual horse. My old horse would be much better out than in. My daughters old pony couldn't care less whether she was out or in and my new horse I left out last year and he wasnt the best but as he is still living out i will leave him on his normal routine. Have two new ponies this year and no idea what they will be like so looks like chips and a flask of hot choccie in the field this Saturday night to make sure all are ok.
Just hope the weather is ok and parties go ahead or we could be in for days of it round my way.
It depends how big the field, how near the fireworks, how young the horse and its normal routine.
If the horse is very young and stressy, the fireworks very near and you are very worried I would put it in the stable, have really load music have a spot light shining onto the stable (to make the light contrast less obvious, use a calmer/sedation, have an older experienced horse next to it and make the horse a little hungry and then put hay out just before the fireworks start.
But my favourite option would be in a big field with a sensible companion. The weather is meant to be quite breezy which helps alot and after a little running around they tend to calm down and it is a good learning experience.
I think, if you look around, there are factsheets on the main H&H website, Horse Welfare, Redwings, Blue X and other Horse Charity website.
Stable as long as she's likes her stable, lights on lound radio i have never had problem and we have fit sport horse types. If she rugged and you think she's likely to be highly strung put on her thermatex.
We are between to villages so we really get it ! But light and radios is the way.
I agree with Canteron. The nearness is a huge issue. If they're a couple of fields away they seem to be fine, but if they were just behind the stables they'd be more frightening.
We have a bonfire every year, and people always bring loud fireworks (event though I asked them not to the first year). The first year I left them out, and when I went to check them during the fireworks I actually woke them up! The second year I thought they were fine, so I left them in (their stables are in the next field to the bonfire. One was fine, even watched the fireworks going up, but the other really didn't like being in and paced a bit. All the following years we left them out with no problems, but they are not silly horses and wouldn't try to jump out or run into a fence. They are in at night, out in the day at the moment, so on the night of the bonfire we leave them in all day until they're a bit fed up, then up their rugs a level and feed them just before dusk, and turn them out. All the horses we've ever had have been fine with this.
We are lucky in that there is a wedding hotel a few fields away, and they usually have fireworks Fri,Sat and Sun eve throughout the summer, so all the animals in the valley are well used to them.
i shut all top doors on my stables, turn all the lights on and turn the radio on quite loud. therefore the lights being on dies out some on the flashes and the radio dies out the bangs.
