Fireworks have started although it's started to rain and they have calmed down, they are very loud and close. Have just been to check on ned, put him to bed about an hour ago before it started. He seems quite upset about the fireworks, is there anything I should be doing for his own safety ? Ie: staying with him or leaving him alone ?

When I leave him alone he is standing at the back of his stable looking out of his window but I can see he is quite scared. His stable is filthy so I have just gone to put some clean straw down for tonight and move some of his hay to the back in the hope he will calm down and eat it infront of his window. When I went in to put some clean straw down and stroke him he wasn't happy at all and wouldn't let me get close to him.

Tomorrow will be worse, should I be staying out there with him ? or letting him be ?

I don't think he can jump out at all he has quite a high door and he is not one to be silly, I have put some rope higher up as an extra precaution though.

personally I think its prob best to leave him alone especially if there are other horses there that are not bothered. If you are anxious and he is too and he is not letting you be there with him then it is not safe.

You could try a radio on to distract him . ;)

Personally though I believe in preparing earlier than this (Or November) and you could prepare for the next celebration and do some habituation with something like ....

Of course this experience of the fireworks and him "surviving" might be enough so that he does not bother next year ;)

If he does get very anxious and physcially active he might be better outside if that is possible ..... opinions on this vary ;)

He is on his own, am waiting to have a companion for him.

He isn't a silly horse, he doesn't jump out of fields or doors etc. but he does get wound up easily, he scares himself etc.

I was told to stay out there with him in his stable but when I went in just to add some clean straw for tonight he was almost pushing me out the way and he walked around me.
