Hey, i hav a 4 month old chocco lab and as you will all know fireworks night is approaching!! I was just wondering does anyone have dogs that are not afraid of fireworks? i think my wee guy is gonna be petrified! I was told to take him out in the fireworks to get him used to it but i dont want to traumatise him, i dont want to baby him either though. Anyone got any past experiences or tips or advice? Anything will be greatfully appretiated! Thanx. X

Sorry no help at all........ but I'm dreading next week, my dog hates any kind of loud noises (we had to get him used to the tv) and people aren't thoughtful enough just to set the bloody things off on FIREWORKS night!!!

How come you think he will be frightened? My Black lab puppy doesn't seem bothered at all by any loud noises... and we have already had fireworks (as I live in London!) and he couldn't care less....

My parents Border Collie is petrified though....

Advice we have been given for her is: feed sweet potato mash to them for dinner (just mix it in) - it acts as a slight sedative and makes them very sleepy.

If the react to the noise just ignore it - don't make a fuss of them. If you make a fuss you are telling them it is ok to be frightened.

A jolly sort of 'never mind about that' then not paying attention to them is supposed to be better.

If you dog gets really frightened of fireworks and loud noises - you could try the crash bang wallop cd. Not sure if it works - but was recommended it as well. But that should priobably be done at another time.... not on fireworks weekend.

My Dally not too bad - but I think that coz she is just a bit soft in the head!!

Try giving him Rescue Remedy about week before Bonfire night - I swear by that stuff, and will be giving to my mare if she gets upset by the fireworks (although were i am is lovely a quiet).

Good luck with ikkle puppy

My lot are fine, just think its gushot or summat

put his bed somewhere quiet, pull the curtains, radio/tv on

and get some of that spray/plug in pheremone stuff for dogs...
cant think what its called

20 week old lab that doesn't bother at all. Which is a good thing as we're hoping to train her to the gun

7 year old lab who doesn't bother as fully trained gundog so used to loud bangs. 6 year old furry monster (in sig) doesn't bother unless they're really loud and she's outside at the time and she'll maybe jump but doesn't seem scared.

Okay guys, 58 years of dog life right here tomorrow is my birthday!!!
Anyway...I have salukis and I will tell you they are quite a timid breed. In the USA we only have fireworks on the 4th of July on Independence Day (okay, now who would like to call my mother for me for the 100th time to explain to her why we don't celebrate the 4th of July in England???) Anyway, I have never had a bit of trouble with them.
I have three rescue salukis (one cross) and one of them, my beautiful black and tan Ally the love of my life LOVES fireworks.
It's the strangest thing to watch as we live near Hastings Castle and all during the summer on Saturday nights they shoot off huge fireworks. We can see them from the sliding glass doors in our livingroom (er um lounge...someday I'll learn to speak English). Ally stands at the door and wags her tail at about 200mph and occasionally looks over her shoulder as if to say, "Did you see THAT?". Now she has all the dogs in the house doing it.
I will post pictures on the 5th...although as someone on here said, it goes on all the time. About five months ago I had my lounge curtains down as was washing them (to remove assorted dog hair, cat hair etc). I distincly heard someone with a shotgun behind our house. Now being American I KNOW what a shotgun sounds like. It doesn't sound anything at all like a firework.
So I call the police as one would...not you Brits I know, but I don't LIKE guns!
They came right away and when I told them I KNEW it was a shotgun I was hearing boy what a kerfuffle! They brought sniffer dogs back into the woods behind my house. Stood around in the lounge having coffee "protecting me"...sweet I know but good Lawd!
Anyway, turned out it was an echo from a farm a good way away from our house.
But what was priceless was the advice the police told me...and that was to put some sheets over my sliding glass doors.
I said "What good would that do. Is it so I don't see the bullets coming or what?"
Love ya

I wouldn't let your dog out near fireworks, apart from probably terrifying him, I knew a labrador who suffered a perforated eardrum from firework noise, and fireworks today are far louder than those of twenty years ago when this happened.

I agree don't make a fuss, but if he jumps on your knee I wouldn't push him off! At least your dog is too big to hide in the washing machine in terror.

i just meant on a walk not near any fireworks, just out into the street n through the park where none are used. I would love to see charlie try n get in the washing machine lol!

No tips at all im afraid, loud ckassical music and draw the curtains. Also you can get special tablets on perscription from the vet that you give to the dog and it makes the dog drousy, We have some because my dog always hides under the fishtank.

If it's new to them then definitely the 'jolly hockeystocks approach', stiff upper lip etc and ignore it! Ours are all used to the gun, as are the horses (clay shooting in the field) and we've had dogs stay with us who have never heard a gun before, but as we and out dogs don't react they don't either.

I agree with not making a fuss if the dog does react to them and i have heared good comements about the CDs. My 2 don't bat an eye lid, but I still avoid taking them out on the night when a lot are going off, as I don't want something to happen that will cause them to be firghtened. When I got my last dog he was 6 months old and his first experience of fireworks did frighten him, but he took his lead off the other dogs and me, they didn't bat an eyelid, so he has never bothered since. So if he does get stressed and you know a firework proof older dog that can babysit and he can take a lead from, it might be worth a try with him being young.

Good luck.

My OH's 6 month old lab (working bred) raises an eyebrow (if that) when he hears a firework.

Don't think he's likely to be bothered, the only thing he's cautious of is large black and white dogs, and he doesn't seem too keen on steep slopes/small cliffs in quarries - had to be scruffed to get him close enough to be carried down (and at 20kg, that's a lot of struggling lab to hold onto while sitting on slippy grass next to a steep slope!)

yea so my dog did freak out! barked for 10 mins straight having been out in the garden tryin to do the toilet whilst fireworks wer going off

he then growled at the window non stop all nite and paced around moanin
