First Aid for Riders?

How many of you would REALLY know what to do in the event of an accident to a rider?

I've just been trained by some Trauma specialist guy, who has his own company that trains people, from all walks of life, how to do life saving first aid.

This covers... head/neck/spinal injuries (a huge part of severe riders accidents), breaks, sprains, crush injuries and MOST importantly, airway viability.

If anyone is interested in partaking in a couple of evenings courses, let me know. He's planning to set up courses, specific for horseriders, all across the south east of england.

. Funnily enough, Ive just returned from my first aiders course, several staff members at camp have to be trained & as Im assistant stable manager, this unfortunatly includes me! There was only me and 1 other person under the age of 50 - shocking!

joined red cross when i was 9 learnt absolutly everything it was great we use to go to point 2point we had to stand next to jump incase they fell off, everytime they use to come round and over jump i use to close my eyes and say please dont fall off !!! do lots of training at work as i work in a hospital infact done this sort of work for 13 years so am pretty good in a situation !

why hurrah,i keep thinking about doing my training,do you not enjoy it anymore ?

I did a course years ago, but someone told me last year that the training had completely changed and that what I knew was now considered wrong.

I would also like to do a veterinary 1st aid course too.

ah ha i see,yeh i need to go in to a different area of care after doing same sort of work for so long i need somthing more taxing but staying in the care world

I've just qualified as a doctor and have done equetrian specific first aid courses in the past, but still feel my knowledge would be woefully inadequate if someone had a serious fall or kick - hopefully that'll change after doing an a&e job! The more people who can get properly trained the better though, it can pretty scary when you have to deal with an injured person, even when you know what to do, it'd be terrifying if you were on your own and didn't know.

I keep my BHS first aid up to date. I recently had to assist with a bad kick/broken leg and training just took over. Not alot that could be done though other than lift person off the horse, lie them down in recovery and wait for the ambulance.

Worst bit was having to help paramedic get her boots and jods off whilst her blood curdling screams (even whit gas and air) went through me.

I think all first aiders who cover horse events should be trained properly like this. If paramedics arent there, someone vaguelly trained in first aid can be there instead - I think thats dreadful. Lets just say I wouldnt want to put my life in most of these peoples hands!
