Inspired by the previous post on would you/wouldn't you stop at an accident, I just thought that I would share a little tip.
I did a first aid course for work and on that course the guy stressed time and time again, that we should get ourselves a little resus mask keyring (basically a polythene sheet with little mouthpiece tube thing in it. He said that you never know when you might need it, but if you did have to give someone mouth to mouth, you need it for your own protection!.
Well I didn't bother with the keyring, but when I ordered the stuff for work, i ordered a few extra masks to keep in my car (part of my work was out in the area working with kids, so I kept a second kit in my car)
On my way to a visit one day, an old man was sitting on the petrol station wall with his little dog - ah, cute I thought and pulled into the petrol station, next thing i know is that the man was flat on his back. A couple of people ran over, but stopped half way, I ran over and the guy was bright red and gasping for breath, I tried to turn him, had to get a spectator to help, totally did it wrong, but got him over and all this sick came out his mouth along with his false teeth.
He was still unconcious and still difficulty breathing, I thought it might be a heart attack, I was just about to tell someone to run to my car for the first aid kit to get a mask when the ambulance came screaming up...thank god!.
The ambulance took over immediately, but tbh I knew I could have started cpr with the mask if I had had to. Without it I just don't know.
Bear in mind if you know how to do CPR, or are even the sort of person that would give it a bash if needed, then get your self a mask or two to keep handy. It would be such a shame to know what to do then not be able to do it through pukey or bloody chops.
