Hi guys,

please could you tell me if a stubben bridle in black but with white padding would be suitable for ridden showing classes please? I have one but not sure if it is ok because of the white and i am brand new to showing :) also pls could some one be kind enough to tell me what kind of whip i can carry..should it be a cane or is that for in hand only?? is a schooling whip ok?? thank you in advance x x

Ideally all tack should be brown, but at local level you can get away with black. However, I would have plain black, no white padding and no flash.

The whip should be either a brown showing cane or brown standard short whip (altho if your tack is black, stick to black for the whip)....no longer than 30cm in length....definitely no schooling whips allowed.

How big is the horse, how old are you (if you don't mind me asking...can make a difference to rider turnout) and what kind of showing class are you going in?

What classes are you planning to do? Are you going to your local show?

Normally, you would want a plain brown bridle and a showing cane but if it's a low level show, then you should be ok with what you've got!

Thank you for your reply..im 24 yo female and my horse is 15.3 hh chestnut american paint horse who is english ridden ( you can see his pic if you look on my profile) ..i have been encouraged to enter some hunter and showing classes as he is pretty well put together and a chunky boy who works nicely...i have never done any showing before and feel bit out of my depth with all the dress codes..and nervous !!
All my tack is black but my best bridle is my stubben bridle which looks nice on his colour but i was unsure if it would be allowed as has the white padding ... i have a navy equitech show jacket , long black boots, white jods and gloves stock etc .. ..i would like to enter tack and turn out, ridden horse and a hunter class Its a ridding club show so pretty small but would like to get the right gear for the future. After speaking to a friend i feel like all the dress code is a bit of a minefield :) x

Well strictly speaking, for riding horse and hunter classes, you need a tweed jacket...with flat noseband and velvet browband for the riding horse class (plain flat browband for hunter classes).

Brown tack much preferred for the show ring, with a straighter cut saddle.

White jods are a no-no - you need beige (some people use canary too, but I prefer to see these on children)...brown gloves (or black if your tack is black).

Also you need a tie, rather than a stock for showing (match the tie up colour wise to the browband for the riding horse class).

But...saying all of that, if your starting at local level, what you have will probably be fine (unless they are very strict..our local level will mark you down for not having correct turnout :(). But have just given that info as you said you'd like to know what to get for the future...

*pops off to have a nose at your profile pic!*
