First Bits

We have two yearlings at the yard and want to start bitting them.

What is the best kind of starter bit to use?

I started mine in a loose ring straight bar rubber snaffle which, with the aid of some lovely sticky golden syrup, she took to beautifully. When she outgrew that after about 6 months I brought her a loose ring happy mouth which she loves!

I prefer to start them on a nathe loose ring nathe.

I think the mouthing properties of this bit are superior to rubber / nylon/ happy mouth or flexi.

I agree, am not a great fan of happy mouths as they can be rough. However, alot of horses like them! I like the shape of nathe bits aswell.

I start them off in rubber straight bars and then progress to fulmer when I start to ride them as it aids with steering, I have a lovely fulmer with keys that the babies love.
