Hi all

I've joined a riding club for the first time this year and am booked in for my first ever cross country lesson on my own horse next saturday (I've had her 16 years!). I've had one lesson a few years back but on a riding school horse. My own little mare will pop a log or two out hacking but that's about as technical as it gets - we've never been on a real life xc course before!

Any advice? We are mostly happy hackers so this is new territory for us! Am really nervous but very excited.

In terms of gear, I have a Champion Jockey Pro skull, and a Racesafe Euro 2000 body protector. Now these are not my everyday kit, in fact they are relegated to the cupboard most of the time, and I know they are hardly top of the range so I just need to check they are ok (I usually wear a Troxel Sierra hat and no BP).

My horse has a GP saddle which will be fine and I don't plan to change her bit but I will be adding a running martingale attachment to her breastplate. She will also be wearing Woof Wear club brushing boots on all legs, will they be ok?

You sound well prepared :) Make sure you are totally honest with your instructor about your and your horse's abilities, and if there is anything particular you are worried about/want to work on.

It may be useful to have a practice with cross country length stirrups, as usually you will ride shorter xc than showjumping or general activities. Even a bit of cantering 'out of' the saddle in the school will help you feel more balanced :)

Most importantly - have fun :D

Sounds like you're all set! IMHO, Racesafe back protectors are the bees' knees - I find they offer more mobility than most, but that's just me. I agree with Rhino too, be completely honest about your background and what you'd like to achieve from the day.

Have a great time, and keep us posted (pics would be good!) x

Nothing to add. :) Was going to say have a neckstrap too, but you can use mane/martingale if you needed it.

Have a wonderful time, as I am sure you and your horse both will.

ETA- remember to breath ;)
