I read conflicting things about first cut and second cut hayledge. First cut is more expensive so I'm assuming it's better nutritional value *but* most of my horses are fatties so the hayledge would only really only be something for them to munch on. Can anyone clarify things for me?

I have just read one article saying first cut is more fibrous and stalky because its growing in spring, and another article saying first cut is softer and leafier. Confusing!

My current supplier's explanation is as follows:

Cuts
First cut is higher fibre due to maturity at harvesting. This results in comparatively lower energy, but higher overall feed value due to presence of seed heads. Resembles seed hay in appearance.

Second cut has higher levels of crude protein due to shorter growing period resulting in a lower fibre, higher energy sample. Resembles meadow hay in appearance.

With any forage you need analysis to be sure what energy your horse is getting from it .
Timothy can be as high in calories as some rye .
As to first and second cut grass is an extremely variable product as so many thing effect the feed value of the finished product .
Analysis is really the only way to be sure .
