My mare had her shoes off at the end of Sept whilst suffering bruising which made her lame. We made the decision to keep her bare and with the help of the barefoot taliban overhauled the diet and bought boots.

It has been a long road but I hope I have done the best thing for madam's long term soundness. Anyway she was sound in hand on all surfaces, sound ridden in the school and hacking over all surfaces in front boots. I have been putting off hacking bare as we have to go down a potholed stoney lane to get off the yard and I wasn't sure how she would cope. She's been fine in hand on this track and with a child on board so I decided it was time to try myself.

So I arranged to do a short hack with plenty of off road to give her a gentle start.

Well she was definitely short striding down the stoney lane but not lame or gimpy. Where possible I took her on the verge. My hacking buddy said she looked tentative.

She felt great on the smooth tarmac, down hill she was more sure footed than in boits or shoes. She was fine off road too, a bit tentative on stoney sections and favouring the grassy bits but happy to canter up the field.

On the way back she felt a bit more confident on the stoney lane, striding out on the better bits but more cautious on the stoney rough bits.

Her feet seemed fine after, maybe a little chipped but not sore or hot

So how do I proceed?

Do I give her more time in boots or do I carry on taking her bare for hacks that aren't to tough? How do I know how much she can cope with?

Most of our hacks are tarmac but as it is rural small lanes they can have gravel on top in places.

What do you reckon?

Glass of red for anyone who posts something helpful before OH comes down stairs and finishes the bottle!

I would just play it by ear and see how she copes! I tend to alternate it, my longer rides I boot and shorter ones on the road I don,t
My boy is not happy over stones without his boots, but he has not been an easy horse to take barefoot!

Sounds sensible, leave the boots for shorter hacks where we can be confident of decent ground but put them on for long or unpredictable hacks.

Would you just let her pick her way over any stoney bits?

I am not the best one to advise, I am sure Lucy P and all the other experts will be along shortly, but in my own experience, the horse will guide you, if for example you ride barefoot one day and they are walking out well but the following day the horse has slowed up and is not so keen, then you ease off and boot until they are comfortable!
Regarding stones, if your horse is ok over them or just stepping a little carefully, that is ok, but not if it is obviously painful to them!
I also think how quickly you progress depends quite a bit on the reason you went barefoot in the first place!
Hope that has been some help!!!:)

F still struggles a bit with the really gravelly stuff ontop of hard road, we had a load of resurfacing locally before it flooded so it is not good in some places. But for the most part he is fine.

We started doing shorter/softer hacks bare and longer ones in boots to give his feet a bit of time to get used to it and then just increase. If I'm not sure of the surfaces where we are going then I attach my boots to the front of the saddle so they are there if I need them. Though if it is a short stretch that is bad for him I have just hopped off in the past which helps a fair bit him being a littley and me not so much!

Hi Kat - best wishes for your barefoot journey :-)

Footy over stones can be for a number of reasons. A soft squishy frog, central sulcus split, or a sole which has yet to thicken and callous sufficiently.

I agree with Pines of Rome, let your horse guide you. They all have their own time frame and requirements. But do keep on top of thrush and be aware footiness can change from day to day.

Thanks for the comments, we had another short bare hack today which went well. Boots back on tomorrow for a longer ride.
