and I survived!!

I was a nervous wreck when I woke up this morning. Charlie (the bay in my sig) is an ex-race horse and even though I have had him for nearly five years I had never taken him anywhere due to not having a trailer. New trailer arrived a few weeks ago and Charlie had one trip in it to bring him from his summer Grazing to home.

Anyway this morning he decided he didn't want to load (which didn't help my nerves at all!) so we put the front ramp down and led him through it a few times, then he was fine so off we went.

Got to the Fun ride and it was a lot busier then I expected. He came out the trailer fine and stood quietly for about 2 minutes. Then he started to get quite excited and wouldn't stand still. Asked my Mum to help me tack him up as I couldn't tie him to trailer, in the end mum was holding him whilst I tried to tack him up but before I could do his girth up he reared sending his saddle flying!

I sent mum of to get me registered as she was to panicky which wasn't helping me or Charlie at all! Got him tacked up eventually and set of with my friend who was on a coloured 5 year old that had never been anywhere in his life (and was as good as gold the whole way)!

Charlie was a bit excited and always wanted to catch up with the horses in front (No matter how far away they were) but he didn't do anything to bad.

The ride was fun but there were alot of narrow woodland tracks that you could barely trot down let alone canter so we just took it nice and steady. Had a couple of canters in the fields but didn't do any jumping as thought that was asking for trouble. We only did the 8 mile ride but it seemed to take us for ages.

when we got back to the trailer and un-tacked he got quite worked up again (I think he could have done with doing the 12 mile route) but we managed to load him fine and he was nice and settled when we got home!

Hopefully he will start to settle a bit better if I do more trips with him, Don't think we're quite ready to go to any quite shows yet tho!

Tea and scones for those that made it to the end!

Well done!
I am quite nervous about taking Jerry out for the first time in my new trailer. I have entered a show next Sunday so that will make me take him out!
I think you were quite brave to go to a fun-ride, I think that would be too exciting for Jerry but I'm hoping a local show won't be!
Well done again and keep making little trips out and I'm sure he'll soon take it all in his stride - at least that's what I'm hoping Jerry will be like!

Thanks, Good luck at the show, let me know how you get on!

Oooo well done you!!
I did my first pleasure ride yesterday too!
We did do the 12 miles, the Arabs that were zooming past us made our usually lazy cobs go much faster, it was fab!!

Only trouble we had was at the end, neither would load to go home, we had about 6 people pushing them in!!

If your boy was OK on a fun-ride then he should be absolutely fine at a quiet show - fun-rides/pleasure-rides are by far the most exciting outings you could possibly choose, the most likely to get any horse wound up (second only to hunting). So if your boy was reasonably well behaved at a fun ride, he should be perfectly fine at a show.
