...and I am so pleased, just have to share!

Sat on her for the first time since trying her out yesterday, and she did some sweet (albeit green) work in the school, and just started to stretch down into the contact a little at the end. She is an ex point to pointer straight out of training, so this was pleasing.

Then today, before work, we went out for a hack - no company as no-one else at the yard rides that early, so off we went for an hour through woodlands, lanes and open fields - steeply downhill, and uphill, had a little canter through the woods - she was impeccable! Totally straight forwards, marched around like she had done it a thousand times before, was good in the school run traffic on the lane, didn't spook, didn't pull... pretty impressive for a baby mare who has barely hacked out alone!

I am just wondering when her teenage tantrums are going to strike. She only came over from Ireland 3 weeks ago, and has moved twice during this period, so wonder if she might be a bit too shell shocked to complain yet

Aww how sweet!! it sounds like she will be up and together and out competing pretty quickly at this rate. Whats her racing name?

Sounds like you had a great time! I have an ex team chaser who I just hack out on, had him 4 months ( came off twice!) fantastic in all traffic, just scared of the horse eating monsters in hedges!
He should be used to it, but I think he is having his teenage tantrums at the age of 16

Been out today for two hours, our first ride in 4 weeks, and he was very good, bit joggy, had a small canter in which he exploded ( good job it was uphill) but I got him back quick enough.
Good luck, and keep on hacking ,sounds like you have a lovely sensible horse

Her racing name is Tiermore Lass... she is out of Moonax, who is out of Nijinsky lines. Mother's sire is Lord Americo who I am told has bred some decent national hunt horses. She, however, failed wholeheartedly at racing - did two, was pulled up in both as a long way off the pace. She seems to have no real racing instinct - I cantered in company in open fields when trying her out, and she showed no inclination to overtake - she is forwards and off the leg, just not competitive.

She seems unusually confident for a youngster - very quick to tell her fieldmates to get out of her space, and has no qualms about being tied up alone, leaving other horses or typically spooky things - grass strimmers, high windsd and the like...

I love hearing happy things about people with ex racehorses/pointers. I've just got one who came out of training about 2 months ago and I adore him. I never thought I'd find any horse I loved as much as my old boy who was pts just before Christmas but this new one makes me feel just as happy. He's also got the same very sweet little TB ears which always makes me smile!!

I had a totally brilliant ride this morning before work too. I decided to try and sit to his canter for once and he did the most beautiful collected canter and made me feel like I was riding a dressage horse!! Even got me thinking that I might take him to do some dressage - serious shock horror thought coming from someone who hunts, team chases, hunter trials and doesn't do anything involving any kind of flatwork to be seen in public!!

God knows why ex racehorses have such a bad name - there are some truly wonderful ones out there. Guess we've got 2 of the good ones!!

I am slightly jealous, but cant complain really, mine came out of racing in October and although there have been times he has terrified me(!!) and we cant quite hack alone- or with anything under 14hh- this counts as alone! He is the best thing i've ever done and i can honestly say i've never come across a better temprement or more loving horse.
There's the third "good one"!
Good luck with her i hope she continues to be lovely

Obviously it's early days still, but yes I am very impressed so far with her nature - I'm not normally a mares person, but so far so good. There's nothing better than a nice ride out before work is there?

Unlike yours she does have very large ears - she also has an incredibly full mane and tail... if she wasn't so slender you'd be forgiven for thinking she was part native

I'm hoping that her bravery will extend to going cross country - but as it is, with the schooling worked on she'll make a super fun hack and allrounder.

Fingers tightly Xed that the swelling on her knee reduces enough for me to stop worrying about.

You'll have the fun to come! ;-) Glad you had a good hack - sure if you carry on with a positive attitude you'll be fine....
