Hi just wondered if people could give any advice on first horsebox or trailer? We have begun to wonder about getting one so we can get out and about a bit more!
We have 2 16.2/16.3 fairly heavy horses & have been told they might be a bit much for a trailer?
& if so anyone know of where to find a good second hand lorry in west mids area & how much do they cost to run? We would want as small as possible, no living required & would only be used locally.

Thanks & sorry for another post on this topic! Any help would be much appreciated as we are clueless!:)

Firstly lets find out what licence categories you have .... do you have B+E and C1 ??

With 2 large horses it will mean a good sized horse trailer which will probably need a plated MAM of at least 2000 kgs (B+E) OR a horsebox well over 3500 kgs (C1)

Lets say both horses weigh 750 kgs each so thats 1500 kgs and the trailer has an unladen weight of 1000 with a 2700 kgs MAM along with a vehicle which has a towing capacity of 2500+ ..... easy to find such set ups

Thanks for getting back to me.

My mum or her friend would be driving, so I'm not sure what licence they have but taken well before 1997.

So you think a trailer is still feasible with two big horses?

Thanks!

Before 1997 means they have both B+E and C1 :)

I assume you have a B licence which means -
SUPERVISING A B+E LEARNER
In April 2010 new rules were introduced for those supervising certain learner drivers but they only affected those supervising VOCATIONAL categories such as C1 C1+E D1 & D1+E where the supervising driver had those categories given to them for free when they passed a pre 1997 car test.
They do not affect those with a pre 1997 B+E licence who wish to supervise a B+E learner.
All B licence holders have B+E provisional on the paper part of their licence and can tow an empty or loaded trailer on all roads including motorways.
The usual rules apply when a learner is driving -
The supervising driver must be aged over 21
The supervising driver must have held a B+E licence for at least 3 years
L plates must be fitted to the front of the vehicle and the rear of the trailer
Correct insurance for a B+E learner

NOW LETS LOOK AT 2 HORSE TRAILERS
The greater majority of trailers will take 2 fairly large horses
This is just one example HB505 TRAILER
Unladen 905
MAM 2340
Max load for trailer 1435 kgs
The interior height is also listed in that link
If you search within that link you can find the specs for many more trailers from various manufacturers

The listed towing capacity of the towing vehicle will restrict what can be loaded into the trailer if the towing capacity is lower than the trailer MAM

If you have a B (car) driving licence and go for a LGV horsebox (over 3.5 tonnes needing LGV C1) then to drive that you will have to take and pass the LGV test (which requires medicals to keep current) but if you go for the trailer then it becomes easier for you to drive as a B+E learner and eventually as a B+E licence holder if you take and pass the B+E test (which lasts for life)

I tow two very large horses in a 510 ,
You need to make sure the car is big enough to legally tow the wieght.
Small lorries are an idea but you have to be sure they can really carry too big horses without going over wieght and they vary a lot so be sure if you go this route get your horses to the vets and wieght them too many people guess what the horse wieght at 500 kilos in reality a 16.3 can be a lot heavier than that.

Thanks for all the replies - so helpful!!

The car we would tow with is a Nissan Navara Tekna so would this be suitable to tow a 510 with two fatties?

Towing is so complicated!!

Thought I would quote your first post again to take it back onto your original topic as I rather took it away from what you first asked for
