Sometime next year around November, I will be getting a BLM Mustang. I have read up on this topic as much as I can, but there is always something that you miss, so I was hoping to get some information on here. I have read the whole bureau of land management wild Mustang website. I know the costs, requirements, and process of adopting one. I have also watched many YouTube videos of people doing the Extreme Mustang Makeovers, tip trainers, and just gentling/training one in general.

I will be getting an experienced trainer to help with the gentling and training process. I am very excited about this next step in my life, but would love to know of others’ experiences and what they learned from it, more in depth of what I should be ready for, and anything else you can think of. I love getting feed back and hearing about other first time and experienced owners. Thank you for taking the time to answer!

I plan on training this Mustang as an all around horse (dressage, trail riding, jumping, etc...). I love going on trail riding/camping trips with horses, so this is mainly what I intend to train the Mustang for. I will most likely be looking for a gelding, but that can definitely change when the time comes to pick him/her out.

I’d suggest posting on a US forum as we don’t really have mustangs in the UK! But look forward to seeing pictures when the new one arrives.

All I would say is, if this is your first horse, don’t get an unbroken/raw one - just buy an older made horse doing the job you already want to do. Training young horses is never the fairytale experience ?

I'm not sure how many people on here will be able to help you. A lot of the members on here are from the UK although we do have international members too.

Having said that, I would love to hear about your Mustang and how your training progresses.

Wow, how exciting! Like the others said, we don’t know much about them over here, you might find more luck on the Chronicle of the Horse forum in the US.
I get the impression they would not normally be considered a breed suitable for a first time owner, are they not quite wild and used in rodeos etc?
Am I right in thinking they are also endangered? I may be wrong about that, just watched Flicka with my daughter, which is the extent of my knowledge on them, haha!
I have heard quarter horses are a nice calm breed, and also Morgans are considered to be very versatile with nice temperaments.
Would love to learn more about the Mustangs.
