Took Ed to our first ODE today. Neither of us have ever done one before, so a big learning curve- very much a bad day on paper but a great experience.

Dressage was brill with a score of 29.9. It was our first test on grass and he didn’t seem any different.

SJ wasn’t great as it was much smaller than we usually jump, but wanted a small XC which led to a few down as Ed just didn’t bother to pick up behind.

(Much better in the warmup!)

XC was a bit of a win and a fail with 3 stops (they let you carry on). The first one at the first jump which carries straight on from the SJ to jump out of the arena. Ed wasn’t quite sure of the question at first.

We also had a stop at some shiny barrels and the water, but we got over everything in the end!

Lots to learn from our round and some good things too so I’m really pleased.

Neither of us have any eventing experience so we’re learning together!

thats a great day out for your first one. It's an amazing dressage score, nevermind for your forst grass one! And its brilliant that your horse could focus on dressage in such a new environment. Thats totally natural that they might be wary of xc jumps out of an arena, it would be so new. If that was my with a baby xc horse id be delighted with that day!

I’m so pleased with him and his attitude today.

Even when he was worried about things, he did give it a go and was just brilliant. He’s so easy to take out and about and he’s great fun!

Think it was a really educational trip out and lots to think about for next time.

I’d say that was a very good start and great experience, well done. That’s a good venue for a 1st outing but the xc jump out of the sj ring did throw my boy a bit too, the water is notoriously unwelcoming and the barrels are quite shiny so those are the kind of things to catch people out!

Sadly not many pro pics available, but saw this and had to buy it.

Not sure Ed is putting in quite enough effort 😂

That pro pic is brilliant!

jumping out of an arena is definitely tricky for some, friend's seasoned eventer had a complete dicky at a arena eventing thing where they had to pop out over a ditch, he was baffled by this as being an allowed concept!

Yes he definitely found it a bit confusing! The picture just made me laugh, it really sums him up. He's not quite sure, but gives it a go very enthusiastically.

Well done, sounds like a worthwhile and enjoyable day out for you both. He is very attractive in that Pro pic.

He is a good looking boy- shame about the rider!
