As with many, many other people my first ODE has been cancelled - it was due to be a lovely easy peasy 70cm to give us confidence before we went up to 80cm next time. I am gutted that they have rescheduled the first day of the event but not the second (my day!)

Now realistically I know that 80cm IS tiny, but I am a bit undecided now - do I fit in as much XC schooling and SJ as possible between now and 7th April (Calmsden unaff ODE 80cm)? Or do I withdraw from there, and enter Elmwood in May which runs a teeny 70cm too?

I want to do the first option really......so I guess I need to get out and SJ and XC at 90cm :)

I know you’ve already got a plan, but just to say that I did my first ODE last year - 70cm at Elmwood. It was tiny but my PRE hasn’t got much scope! We then did the 80 at West Wilts which was very up to height (WW had a reputation for being easy for the levels, but everyone was saying it had beefed up a lot..).

I only do ODEs for a bit of fun so wanted to find a 70 but couldn’t see one anywhere, so I’ve entered Calmsden 80. It’s billed as a straightforward and welcoming course for first-timers at a level so fingers crossed! If you do go to Calmsden let me know, maybe we can do a HHO meet-up!

Fab - I'll see you at Calmsden :) I was planning on WW as my first BE event if I bother doing stuff on a ticket because I had hoped it was relatively easy, maybe I will re-think that :D

It was straightforward at WW but a couple of much bigger fences than I expected at 80! Pocholo and I aren't very bold, although he didn't seem at all bothered by the height and was eyeing up the 100 fences ;) We did go clear but with a tonne of time faults as the ground was hard and we'd had issues in the SJ so didn't seem worth pushing hard! This was at the unaff but it was the same course as the BE (I checked on Shoestring!).

I would be careful about calmsden as a first event. It’s a lovely course but very hilly so your horse needs to be super fit, I’ve re routed to tweseldown for my horses first one because I simply can’t get him fit enough in time with snow etc. I wouldn’t want him to get tired and start stopping and have a bad run.

Just mentioning because I remember you saying about fitness etc.

Thanks Michen that’s helpful - I’ll see how we do this weekend and take it from there! There are plenty of other choices luckily...,
