First proper turnout out after 14 weeks box rest. Eeek!

Turned Jay out today properly for the first time since he fractured his radius and it was so scary. I gave him Sedalin and he went out calmly on his own but next to his friends. He had a bronco fit and started to graze so I relaxed until he set off at a full gallop and then set his mates off. They settled and groomed over the fence for a while then Jay was squeeling and striking out with his bad leg (typical) then he and his partner in crime raced up and down the fence like idiots, I was mortified. I know it was stupid but I had to get him out before he did himself any damage and suprisingly he calmed right down whilst I put his bridle on and came in no problem at all.
Got to do it all again tomorrow and Im dreading it. The sedalin had no effect at all so I dont know whether its worth even giving him any. We are hoping to keep him on his own for good now although he will have horses either side of him. I know its not ideal but his accident has been waiting to happen. He and his friend are terrible together, playing really rough and he may not be so lucky next time.
Does anyone else turnout seperately?
 
I have an 11mth old filly she currently stands at 15.1hh ( love telling everyone this as they think shes huuugghe lol ) ... I only allow her to go out with a 13hh 12 yr old gelding ... hes very calming towards and settles her abit plus dont want any injuries as we have a the inhand class at balmoral

Oh God, I bet you was terrified. When mine first went out after 4 month Bpx rest, I turned him out completly on his his own for 3 weeks, then he went out with a veteran. Now he goes out in his old field, herd style really. I dont think solo turn out, is anywhere near enoguh as good for them as TO with company... And remeber just because an accident happened once, it doesnt mean anything will happen again.
 
Yep. My mare was on her own for a year as there was no one to go out with her. In November we put my friends gelding in with her and all was well till a few weeks ago, then they started shagging, and when they weren't shagging he was biting chunks out her neck and occasionally kicking her (mainly because he got fed up with her pestering him!!!). He's now gone out with the gelding and she is back on her own.
 
I know your right and I feel so cruel but they really are bad together. Its a small yard, 4 in his field including him, all big horses and all YO's so its difficult to seperate them. Jay and his mate have been getting worse and worse over the last couple of years, they spin round at high speed holding on to each others rugs, rears and boxing, Jay ends up round his mates neck or vice versa. The latest is he drops to his knees at speed, bites mates belly then jumps up and runs off again and hes got an awful habit of walking behind the others that close and doesnt move if hes told off or they threaten to kick him. Lady on yard said Im not suprised hes lazy when you ride him, he never eats just plays all day.
 
Loved the way you wrote that, thanks you cheered me up, had a chuckle not of course at whats happened, its awful when they keep getting injured. Turned our two baddies out in the school once when it was really icy in the fields and my friends horse was ready to bonk mine ........ they are both geldings!
Im hoping they will settle and it all works out ok.
 
I turn out in my own private paddock, sometimes only have a pony one side, sometimes horses both sides - I do not feel cruel doing this at all.

Personally I wouldn't give him Sedalin as it can make them rather overly gungho

Thanks for replying, its good to hear it works for you. He spent a long time on his own when he had his tooth removed as he had a trephine and drain in and he was fine then. Im hoping he will stop messing with his friend over the fence and settle soon. We have sectioned a large area with electric fencing tonight so that will be his field now and he will always have horses next to him.
 
Oh that sounds so familiar. Just like our girl. I'm sure he'll be miles better the next time and will soon settle, you can't blame them when they've been cooped up for so long. I know what you mean about going out with others. Our mare goes out with one other now, and even that can be stressful. She is the trouble maker and never knows when to stop. I think he will be fine on his own as long as he has others next to him. Once they have had a major injury like this you do tend to become totally neurotic. Goodd luck hope he continues to do well.
