I've had such an amazing afternoon. I got my first horse a couple of weeks ago, and he's finally out of isolation, so we had our first lesson with my long-time instructor today.

We had planned just to do groundwork with him, but he was such a star that I ended up getting on and doing a tiny bit of ridden work in walk. He was such a good boy. Although he was pretty "looky" to start with, he soon chilled out and it was brilliant. He did everything I asked of him, and I felt so comfortable with him.

I'm still buzzing. Roll on our next lesson on Saturday!

And I still can't quite believe he's actually mine.

That sounds great. I still remember my first horse like it was yesterday and the amazing feeling. Take loads of photos and treasure every second. Enjoy your lesson on Saturday.

What a lovely write-up! Lucky you for having found such an all round good dude, and so handsome too, and and lucky Curly for having found you. I hope you have many happy years together

We had another good lesson yesterday. Started off by revisiting the groundwork exercises from Wednesday, and he was foot perfect, before I hopped on. He went really well, and was lovely and responsive, settling in to a nice way of going.

Today has been more challenging, however. He’s at a livery yard in the middle of a forest, which is very beautiful but quite different to where he lived before. My instructor advises all new horses be taken out for short in hand walks in the forest so they can check out their surroundings before doing ridden hacks. He found it all a bit too much, along with a very busy morning on the yard, and wasn’t listening to me very well at all. I think to some extent he didn’t really understand what he was being asked to do, coupled with being a bit spooked by his surroundings. It’ll just take time, and I spoke to a few others at the yard who were very reassuring.

He has settled very well into his permanent field, with two mares who he’s firm friends with already. When I went to catch him today he came over with one of them by his side. It was very sweet.
