First Season of the year - help!

About the end of March for the past few years my mare gets a very sore back whereby the muscles go into quivering spasm. Its so bad that if I put pressure on it she would sink away. I have tried everything throughout the years (saddles, physio, acupuncture etc etc) and am now absolutely convinced that it is due to her first season of the year as after about a couple of weeks it goes away and for the rest of the year she is fine. I want to put her on something now to see if I can avoid it happening this year. I was thinking of Naf's Oestrus but her temperament doesn't change - she is never moody and always good mannered. Can anyone suggest any other herbal remedy that might work?
 
She gets fresh and spooky and a couple of years she bucked me off whilst riding in the school when there was a lot going on in the car park. Just got giddy and set off with me bucking. After that she was on Oestress non stop. I avoid the school during Feb though have done anyway after her tendon injury. We just hack out instead as this keeps her interested and she loves it.
 
I will be reading with interest as my mare is the same, but she is really moody and hates being groomed or having rugs on/off.
 
littlebranshill - whereabouts on your horses back is she sore?? Im just wondering if Im barking up the wrong tree with my mare being sore at the moment - it would be fabulous news for me if shes having a stupidly early season - Im 99.9% certain shes not,(she certainally shouldnt be - its only January!!) but its WAY preferable to the other....

is your mare sore at the moment, or are you just pre-empting?? Hope you can help her out though, have total sympathy with uncomfortable seasons !!

My mare has been near geldings just about all year round and I think shes been in season most if not all that time. I can always tell with the smell of her wee in her stable - distinctly fishy odour.
 
My Mare has just had her first season this year (well part of last year too!) I did tell her when there is snow on the ground and -7 she has the wrong idea, she is a nightmare so will be going on regumate when she starts being re-backed, to be on the safe side as she can verge on being dangerous
 
My welsh D mare is in season already , she is turned out with a group of mixed mares and geldings. She isn't moody or anything you only really notice from her minging tail..
But I do know someone with a mare that she show jumps and when she is in season she gets sore along her back. She had the vet and he said the mare was uncomfy because of her ovaries. So if I remember right she has her on regumate.
Think the herb angus castus( might be spelt wrong) is supposed to be good for hormones.

I am just pre-empting. How old is your mare? In the past the symptoms have been acute when I come back from a ride (no symptoms beforehand) and the area underneath the back of the saddle i.e. kidney/ovary region goes into trembling spasms. These are painful to the touch and she shrinks away. They continue acutely for a couple of days and then slowly subside for the next couple of weeks. There are no other instances of this throughout the year other than towards the end of March.
Over the years I have had saddles changed, massage, osteo, acupuncture, and was referred to the horse hospital for back xrays and it was them who confirmed her ovaries were normal. Now I am convinced its season related so fingers crossed that this will work this year!
Otherwise is not moody and is generally a very sweet mare al year round.
 
shes 14 - and shes not ridden. We did try, but then discovered that her hind limb lameness was becuase shes got kissing spines, so I stopped again (shes only been ridden 7 times in the last 10 years - and thats when I got her!) - shes had tildren and the improvement has been amazing,to the point where shes all but sound now.

The other day I took her rug off and she dipped really badly as it went over her back - and when I gently ran my hand over her spine,it was warm where the KS are - I think shes tweaked something or rolled on a stone or something - but your post about the seasons got me hoping, thats all - shes got a bucas rug and its flipping heavy - so it could well have put pressure on her....

asked the vet and got told to keep an eye on her - so thats all Im doing at the moment. Shes not showing any signs of seasons - but she doesnt really anyway - I just saw your post and thought that maybe,just maybe this heat over her spine is a bit of a red herring....

time will tell I guess - but thankyou for this thread - its given me more of a smile than ive had for the last few days!
 
lol - not clutching at straws so much as it was something that I hadnt really considered as a possibility. Im still more convinced shes tweaked it somehow (she does love rolling right over - hence my thinking about rolling on a stone or something)

Shes got the farrier Monday - will be interesting to see if she gives him the amount of grief she usually does or more....
