Today I took my little yearling (Taz Monkey) to his first ever show I've been looking forward to it for a few weeks and finally the day came
cool.gif
He'd had a bath earlier in the week and I spent 2 hours yesterday getting his legs sparkly white and his tail tangle free. He'd had a little work done in the arena teaching him to trot up and a practice run out in the trailer earlier in the week too so was quite prepared for it.
We got there and he was cool as a cucumber, came off the trailer and munched hay whilst watching all the fuss and animals.
He waited for about 2 hours for his first class and then went in the indoor school (first time he's seen one!) was impeccably behaved and then went back to the trailer to wait for his next class. There were only three in our class and he came third-the judge said to me that his head was out of proportion to his body as he has a poor neck and shoulder and needs 'building up' and his back end needs built up and he needs some topline.

I'm chuffed to bits with how he's looking and appreciate that he will be slow to mature so am not worried about how he compares to his peers. His neck is massively improved in just 2 months and I think he has an ok bum on him!

He then went into the yearling horse class; I knew he was going to look like a weed in this class as he will only ever make a small horse but he's not a pony so that was all we could enter. (There was only a shetland in the pony class!)
So there were two of us in the horse class and the other entrant was enormous and very well conditioned, a really nice looking mare. And then us!
So again he did a really good show and was brilliantly behaved. Judge didn't say anymore about Taz other than that he was well behaved and that is was good for him to be out getting educated

So we had second in that class.
Few pics (aren't great sorry

) no jacket on as it was boiling hot and low-key/not exceptionally formal

You look so happy and people that over feed and produce youngsters ,don't do them any favours.
Feed him well through the winter and he will go from strength to strength, who needs a giant horse anyway?

Well done! What a little star!

Just remember in the long term he is going to be your competition horse and it 'can' be unhealthy to over condition a youngster for what they are looking for in the show ring. His expected adult height is 15.2 so he's getting there...remember the warmbloods don't always stop growing until they are 5, 6 or even 7

(his dad has grown a tad this year as a 6yo

and his mum has a long but very pretty face

Thanks Teffy! He's only on Dr Green at the moment!

(he'l' go back on feed soon i'd think though when the grass is eaten down)

I'm happy that he'll get there in his own time and there is sod all I can do to change what height he makes.

I was slightly cross with one of the judges in the 'horse yearling' class tho as she stood at his shoulder and said ' he MIGHT make a horse, eventually... A small horse' I laughed it off and took it in good humour but would have liked it more if she hadn't said it!

I think he looks fine for a yearling - and I was brought up on a show pony stud!! I don't know what's in the middle of the ring in your second photo - cob perhaps judging from white halter in which case how can it be compared to yours?
If it was just a local show don't worry - quite often the judges are hopeless!

It was branded if that means anything and i'm sure trakener was mentioned but it was quite chunky so no idea. It was huge and really nice too.

Rubbish! Yearlings don't have 'topline'. Proper topline comes with work and yearlings don't do work so how could he have??????

Same with the back end

You have to take away from the day the experience he has had and his behaviour. He sounds like a fab baby and I bet you'll have lots of fun (and success) with him as he grows up.

I politely smiled and nodded in total agreement with her whilst saying to myself the same thing. I can't see how the words topline and yearling fit in the same sentence! Don't they all have a gangly phase where the bits don't all match and fit perfectly!

We did a lap of honour and the crowd clapped and I swear, for just a moment, there was extension - he even flicked his toes! and then went back to lazy trot

He looks lovely
laugh.gif
And very well behaved. I rate good behaviour well above pretty looks!

Some judges are just useless. I took Piper into a coloured horse innhand class and the judge was suprised when I said he was 18months old - she seems to think he was just a weedy cob
