So I've got my first show next weekend with my part loan - mountain and moorland unaffiliated. He's been entered into a few different classes, so we have a few options.
Originally I was just doing one, possibly 2 in hand and the owners daughter would do the ridden - however I've been told she may not do it due to other commitments in which case I'm backup. I've never competed whatsoever, so I haven't a clue what to do - never mind what to wear!

I went to the store today and picked out a green tweed jacket and a mustard tie. However, I really liked a green tweed one that had a hint of pink with a black collar which looked amazing with a pink tie but the staff said it would clash with my ride who is a copper aka ginger welsh D. Do you guys agree?

Secondly, I have long black leather riding boots and a black velvet hat. Brown or black gloves?

Can I wear exactly the same for both classes?

Sorry, silly questions but I've never done this before and want to make sure I do it right! At least if I don't get everything right physically, I will still look the part ;)

For the in hand classes you would be better wearing some cream/ beige trousers and short boots, they will be more comfortable and look smart but everything else sounds fine, brown gloves are correct, don't forget a cane.

If you like the other jacket it may look better with a darker more subtle tie so it does not clash with the pony, you never know what you may ride in future so I would get the one I liked best.

That is similar to the jacket I wanted - the whole collar was velvet and the pink was less obvious but I think that blue tie looks naff with it.

Ive never done this before though so what colour would you have?

And thanks for your advice.

Oh and this is the one I bought:

brown tweed is safer than green but green fine. pink in any way is always a bit risky. Some judges dont mind at all but some hate it so its not really worth the risk

In hand you should wear dark or light trousers (opposite to the horse's legs) short boots or stout shoes ideally brown, hat should be tweed, brown or green (to match your jacket) or a navy riding hat. Jacket, cream or buff shirt is always nice and a brown or navy tie but your mustard one sounds fine. brown gloves, brown cane

Its not clear from your post if you are going to do the ridden class but if you are then swap the in hand trousers for beige/yellowish jodhpurs and wear long boots (large M&M the rider wears long boots) same jacket.shirt/tie/cane/gloves and navy hat

If your only riding hat is black its not the end of the world though

I prefer the one you have bought, I dont like black velvet collars and agree that the blue tie is wrong but feel it would be hard to find one that really goes with it, I have a fairly good selection of ties, many are silk and found in charity shops for 50p.

I'm not sure if I'm doing the ridden yet - to be honest, I hope not because the owners daughter is a much better rider than me and will certainly come our with a better placing but apparently no-one is sure if she's still able to do it. I should find out later in the week - I'll still be willing to have a go!

I have both cream and beige joddys. I was hoping to just wear them and my long leather boots for the inhand. I've already spent money on a tweed jacket, brown gloves and tie. Also don't fancy buying another hat so hopefully my black velvet hat will do?

I didn't see any brown tweed jackets but agree they probably do look better! I was in a rush so could have missed them. All I saw was green and blue, and I was told blue is a no-no.

Again, thanks folks!
