Went to Appleby today for afew hours, I felt really weird like I really stood out or something LOL! I saw some threads on here saying they didn't think the horses were in bad condition but I did see some which were bad :( I just wanted to take them all home!! Saw an absolute gorgeous white Cob with a LONGGGG white mane! Stunning. And it was for sale! But I think I would of regretted that really! She was gorgeous though. Have any of you ever bought a horse from appleby? I was really tempted and she probably went cheap! She was very headshy though but she looked like a unicorn! X

No I couldn't bare to go to such things. It's not just the under fed, uncared for horses that would make me so sad it would also be the disrespect some (not all I am sure!) Show to their horses.

Ive always been told the horses go for tons there, its their way of money laundering

I live 5 miles from Appleby, I could write a book about the cruelty. That is why I avoid the place like the plague.

I've been a few times. The trotting road scared the life out of me, saw yearlings being raced and shod :( nothing in particularly poor condition and nothing else being mistreated really. I didn't go to the river bank though.... And probably wouldn't like to be there after dark!

I bought my mule from Appelby, she was in good condition and liked people. She had been very well broken to drive and had manners. I was given a hand to give her a push onto the trailer (I had a broken arm at the time) and offered lunch from the guys next to us.

However the trailer car park was horrific and I thought we wouldn't get out wihtout hitting something or someone, I was terrified. If I'd been driving we would still be there now!! Public car park is fine and well organised.

I went years ago on the last day. I fell for the saddest looking donkey foal whose owner seemed desperate to sell. :( So much so that even though I said buying it was out of the question, the price kept dropping....

I told him that, anyway, I had come in a car and had no way of transporting a donkey home, even if I was persuaded to buy. At this point seller started trying to convince me I could put the donkey foal on the back seat of my car.:mad:

It was hard to walk away, but I did, and often wondered what became of the poor little scrap.

I would have been one of the 'victims' who'd have bought it ):
This is why I shouldn't go! :)

At the time I was too ill to take care of a donkey, and was still allergic to horses (and probably donkeys!) so I shouldn't really have risked Appleby at all.

As I see it though, if he'd sold that poor little thing and taken any cash home, there would be a greater chance of him repeating the whole thing with another tragic foal the following year. It's really hard but it's probably better to avoid ever buying from dealers like that. :(

However, the rest of the horses I saw were in pretty good nick. I had to turn away from the road where they trot them so fast with huge lads on their backs though. :(

It's a shame really as I really love cobs, trotters and gypsy cobs. But I have no place to keep one, so i'd be stuck if I did. Another reason why I won't go!
