Am very new to eventing and daughter has entered into her first BE 80, have read the rule book but wondered if everyone could give me some advice / clarification on a couple things please

Stopwatches - is she going to need one? I feel she has enough to think about xc as it is but it will be frustrating if all else goes well and she gets lots of time faults. Pony is only 14.2hh and has a good steady canter / gallop and he seems to hit the optimum time on other arena eventing / xc quite readily but we never really have thought about it until now !

And related to that, optimum times for both sj and xc? - do you get time faults if you go over or under the opt time in both? I thought you only got time faults for going over the opt time or way too fast but friend went out last week and got time faults in both SJ and XC for going too fast (but not excessively so)

Any other advice greatly appreciated for first time BE-ers as well!!!

In the SJ you get 1 pen for every second you are over the time allowed, usually this only comes into play if there has been an issue (ie refusal or error of course), occasionally, if someone is particularly slow/cautious a few time pens are given. Elim. if you exceed twice the time allowed, this only really happens if someone falls off ime. No fast time pens in SJ so your friend must have been slow. The time allowed is calculated at 325m/m.

XC you are given 0.4 pens for every second over the OT and every second more than 15 seconds under the OT. So effectively there is a 15 second window where you get no time pens. At 80 the speed is 435m/m.

I'd def. not be bothering with a stop watch at 80. It's only recently they have been allowed and it takes a bit of time to get used to using them properly. You will just need to see how they get on time wise and adjust if necessary.

Other advice, leave loads more time than you think you will need for each phase. Enjoy it :)

She doesn't need one, but it is good practice for getting a feel for the right pace.

We don't look at the watch on the xc, just listen for the beeps for the minute markers. You can get an app for your phone that calculates your minute markers while you walk the course.

If you are planning quite a few events then maybe think about using one after the first few runs.

You can practice at home/hacking with the correct speed as well.

You will have great fun, eventing is a lovely sport :)

For her first few runs, your daughter should just think about keeping a nice rhythm and line to the jumps - no need to add timing/stopwatch into it if she hasn't practised that at home.

Eventing is very friendly, so don't be afraid to ask questions, chat with your fellow competitors, and have fun! :)

Thank you - exactly what I was looking for!

thank you - i think you are right, for this one I will just let her wear one and use minute markers and do some practice at home

Thank you - I do just want it to be fun rather than thinking about time faults etc - the aim is firstly a clear XC then a good dressage (he can be a little opinionated!) and then a clear sj. He has a good rhythm so will just let them get on with it and have a practise at home for next time
