Hello there! Just have a few questions about hunting as I have never been out before. I am based in surrey so any knowledge of relating to the Surrey union would be great but all information gratefully received.
So.
To go on a newcomers hunt what level of fitness would you have needed to achieve?
Eg pace, miles covered, terrain etc:

Newcomers does it mean its just got more guidance or is it easier then all this hedge hoping stuff???

Also jumping what things should I expect??

I am game for anything however I'm going to be sitting on a green 14,2 hh light weight cob he is strong but well mannered and does listen horse. however he is spooky and hasn't done any proper xc except the rough and ready logs we find out on the tracks.
Must think I'm mad but who isn't?!?

Hunt on the 12th all advise would be great thankyouuuu

Most jumping out hunting is not hedge hopping - some hunts don't jump at all, , others don't have hedges and with most hunts on most days, it's possible to get round (although it can take some time and requires a good working knowledge of the lanes! )
SFAIK the SU are well hunt jumped so 3' approx rails, tiger trap type fences.

Fitness-wise, the fitter the better for both of you to reduce the risk of injury and so you enjoy yourself more. You should be up to an hour energetic schooling or an hour and a half similar hacking without either of you being exhausted.

Take it quietly, stay at the back and don't stay out too long to begin with. Don't charge about and wind your young horse up, just because everyone else is. If you educate him quietly and let him settle well, , thenyou will have a horse to enjoy hunting on for ever.

Good luck and let us know how you get on!

Hi there...

Newcomers goes on for a couple of hours and all jumps are optional. Why don't you call or email the hunt secs, they are very friendly!

Have fun,

x

PS there was a very long trot at the start of newcomers last year, presumably designed to take the wind out of the sails of unruly horses! You should be fine - bit up and take gin ;)
