Hi all!

Need some advice! I'm looking to move to a livery yard for the first time at the end of the month and after only having lessons and keeping my horse at home and out 24/7 I have absolutely no clue about anything on yards other than the off visit to my friends!

But now my dear ponio has mud fever and needs the stable as well as the school for use as she's only a baby.

So i was looking for advice and guidance about how to not p**s other owners or yard manager off! :o

and generally as ive never stabled my horse before, what are the normal yard rules?

A suggested general kind of routine? at the moment she gets an eve feed and a check over and thats it but now ill have a lot more to juggle with beds and turnout before work at 8am.. the yard is about 3 minute drive away..

Any help is sooo gratefully received!! <3

I've never got how people manage to get it so wrong on livery yards! I think the key is to always be friendly and polite, never let yourself be drawn in to bitching (just smile and change the topic), always clean up after yourself, do your share of shared tasks like poo picking, avoid borrowing other people's things and always pay your bills on time :)

I assume you are moving to DIY livery? and you have already picked where you are moving too?
Have you seen/signed the contract for the yard. Did you discuss the yard routines/rules when you visted/viewed the yard for your horse.

Bascially it will be trial and error for the first bit just finding your feet and finding what works for you. You need to find out what the rules on turnout are, do they have to be at a certain time are you not allowed to leave a horse on its own ect. Depending how big your yard is you will be able to work out who rides when and ouot your horse out there when available.

Good Luck

ym happiness!
pay bills on time
keep your area clean and tidy
dont complain constantly, but raise issues that concern you - they should be there for the welfare of your horse
be polite and well mannered! both horse and owner

other liveries happiness
be polite and friendly
dont nose around in others business
keep out of bitching - for your own sake!
dont use/take people stuff without asking

you'll be fine! enjoy having more people to talk about all things horsey!!!!!

Hi all.. For all that remember this thread here is an update!! we did move onto our yard about a week ago, the YM is fab, the price is fab the stables and facilities are fab...

Then my ponio goes and breaks the gate. decides she doesn't want to be loose schooled anymore and from a stand still essentially belly flops the gates smashing it to peices. :o:o:o:o :mad::mad:

mortified is not the word! luckily told YM and she said no worries and im getting OH To fix it..

not cool!!!

photo evidence from the pleasant film i was taking at the time!

urgh!

Cracking photo ! Darling girl.

At least she tried to jump it, my lad just battered a 5 bar gate by casually leaning against it with his chest and broke the latch and top rail.

Brilliant Im so impressed with picture!
That is why my horse doesn't get loose schooled- always on lunge line as he is a risk or charging fences! Ha ha i don't trust him

Oh dear, lol! Thought I was going to have a similar incident at my yard today, as I left one pony in the stable to go and get the other. Of course all other horses were turned out, so he was going balistic trying to climb the door. Got back from the field to find YM and a livery stopping him from climbing. Little sod! In his defence, it was the first time they'd been separated since arriving (except on a ride), so they're still a little clingy with me and each other.

Hope your move has otherwise gone without incident, OP! So far, I'm astounded at how good mine have been (moved onto the yard last weekend). Like you, I've been on my own doing my own thing. So far, it's been fine, but it's early days. I'm not very social, though, so this is very much pushing my comfort zones. I was on full livery 13 years ago, but that's a different world to DIY, I think!

Edgedem: you've got a really good YO there who actually accepts that horses are horses & things happen. Some YOs would have gone over the top ranting & raving but yours says 'No Worries'. As long as it gets repaired & done well that;ll be good, youll win brownie points for repairing it well & quickly as well.

OP, just go with the flow at the new yard. Chat to the YO & you'll soon get into the swing as to how things are done. Just be polite & friendly to everyone & things should be ok. :)

i did make the mistake really, weve never loose schooled before and my friend was doing her horse before me and said give it a go im sure shell be ok/.. hmm apparently not! lunge line now until she learns a little more respect :o

im half impressed though and she has never jumped before! ha! going to be a show jumping pony now.. haha just landed herself some more work!

And just because people seem to be understanding that sometimes the most normal horse is crazy... here a little bit of her schooling video! and me.. panicking haha

im learned one thing since being here, being honest and respectful is all you can do! i could have covered it up and said it wasnt me but i just wouldnd and couldnt do that!

OH have a drill and LARGE screws at the ready, he also said hes sort the other hinge out while hes there so it latched properly again :) good man!
