I have never hunted before, but was planning to give it a go this year. however, i am always reading and hearing of established hunt members whinging about 'first timers' and tbh its putting me off. Are people really so judgemental of newbies to this sport? as when i do go, i would like to be able to enjoy it rather than worrying about what everyone else thinks of me! (and i do have a very well behaved horse, and know the baisics of ettiquette). Or is this view of new members limited to a minority (i am hoping it is), are hunts usually welcoming to new members? We all have to start somewhere people!!

I think most hunts are very welcoming to new people, IMO if you subscribe or come out regularly you should learn the correct dress and etiquette, but when you start, you can get away with murder! Not really, but you will be made welcome and no, people don't mind if you make mistakes (bar kicking a hound!).

Fab, thanks! My horse is VERY well socialised with dogs and has hunted quite a bit before. I would never dream that she would strike at a hound (or anything else for that matter).

Oops!!

My new ned has had a couple of goes, luckily has missed both times, as long as you give them a good hiding while everyone is watching and grovel profusely to the master and huntsman you may live to hunt another day!!

Two of our whips kicked out at hound today at the meet, blame it on no space and hetted horses, but poor thing was not in good shape when we left the pub.
