My family and I are attending Burghley for the first time. My parents are arriving a few days in advance of us and they need to get from Heathrow to Peterborough via train/bus. They are renting a car in Peterborough and will pick my husband and I up in Stamford (or Peterborough).

Any advice on how to do this?

Thanks in advance!

Renting a car at Heathrow would be much easier!

If they want to go by train they will need to go into London, then catch the train to Peterborough. Ticket costs on that line are rather high!

It is very easy to be fair, from heathrow underground to st pancras, train out to luton direction, only 1 changed and that is it, i have done it a few times and have found the train easier than driving

I agree with jemima - it would be much more straightforward for your parents to pick a car up at Heathrow.

If they can't / won't do this, then the easiest way is to get the Piccadilly line on the London Underground, from Heathrow to Kings Cross Station (direct line, no need to change anywhere), and then to get on the Mainline train from Kings Cross to Peterborough.

It would probably be easiest for you and your husband to make the same journey, and have your parents pick you up from Peterborough as well. I think you have to change trains at Peterborough to get to Stamford, so you mght as well cut that bit of faff out of the journey.

Enjoy Burghley!

I am afraid I disagree! I don't know your exact position but if you or your parents are not experienced at UK driving to be thrown straight onto the M25 is not something I would recommend! Having driven round that stretch of the M25 for 4 years on a daily basis I would think it will be far more relaxing for them to get the tube into London and then a train up to Peterborough, it is probably quicker as well as there are major roadworks on the M25 between Heathrow and the A1 and further roadworks on the A1 so it could be a traffic nightmare, the tube and train combination will take approx 2 hours. I would imagine it would be easier for you to do that as well and get them to pick you up from Peterborough than you get to Stamford as I think it will be easier. Anyway, here is a link to National Rail Enquiries that will give you all the details you need and allow you to book tickets and seats if you want.

As others have said - Piccadilly line from Heathrow to Kings Cross then the mainline to Peterborough - depending in where your parents are staying picking you up from Stamford station during Burghley can be next to impossible.

I live a few miles from Burghley so happy to help with places for them to pick you up from avoiding the worst of the traffic :)

Thank you so much - just the information needed.

Jane_lou that was a very handy link! Looking at the rail map I found on that site, plus a map of the underground it actually looks fairly straightforward. If we pack light we should be fine. The return trip however (post-Burghley shopping) might be more challenging. :)
