I’ve entered into a local working hunter show next weekend, it’s both mine and my horse’s first time 🙈
I’ve done some research and I am fairly certain on turnout- I will wear tall black boots, beige jods, a tweed jacket, brown gloves, a white tie shirt and red tie, a skull cap with a navy silky kind of material hat silk and a short black jumping crop and hair tied back in a neat bun and hairnet.
My horse will wear a brown grackle (without a fluffy nose padding), plain silver stirrups to replace my usual bright red sj ones, a brown jumping saddle with a brown saddle cut numnah and I have entered him into the 70cm and 90cm rounds so I won’t bother with any boots and he doesn’t need a martingale of any kind and I will plait his mane and trim his legs (he’s a Dutch warmblood), I’m thinking of plaiting his tail too rather than pulling it as I would rather keep it looking natural after the show, unless I will get marked down for plaiting it?
I also have an idea what to expect in the jumping phase, I know to keep him in a steady but bold Rhythm the whole way around and try and keep him in an outline as the round is judged on how we both look rather than speed
However I’m unsure of the flatwork and conformation phases i.e. is one under saddle/tackless and one ridden? For the flatwork I heard that you walk away from the judge and trot back to them but equally I’ve seen people do almost a short, simple dressage test around the arena in w,t+c? And for the conformation phase does my horse just need to be stood square, still and respectfully or is some movement required? I’m guessing the judge will give some instructions on the day but any info/advice before then would go miles thanks!! 😊

The jumping is the most important phase, then there is one other phase when confo/manners etc are judged. Unless the judge says otherwise its all ridden, you walk away from the judge, turn and trot back towards the judge keep your line straight and the judge will move away. Then you can continue into a short w/t/c show on each rein with gallop where there is room to do so. Halt, rein back, salute and return to your place. It is usually only bigger shows that want you to strip the horse.

Eta, plaited tail is fine. I prefer plaited to pulled.

It will depend is the answer depending on the level of show and the judge. @Pearlsasinger beat me to it but was going to say the same. At higher level shows a pulled tail more correct but plaited will be fine. Keep your show short but enough to show judge your horse’s paces and well schooled. Nothing worse than someone going on and on in their show. Not working hunter but my set one is trot away trot diagonal into canter change rein canter and extension/gallop as working hunter back to trot and halt. I sometimes throw another canter change in. Good luck and we expect a report !
