So frustrated today!! Have had my mare for 4 months, she is my first horse. Its been a bit of a rocky start neither of us settled at our first yard and I totally lost my confidence, basically I was scared of her. So bit the bullet moved yards to a brilliant new place with a great yard owner. Horsey has really settled I've had loads of lessons, had to buy a new saddle, and was thinking of joining a riding club really starting to enjoy her:)
Now over the past few days she has started bucking( that's why I initially bought the new saddle) initially in canter and today in trot. It's not little bucks it's big get off bucks!!! I know it's probably me coz I can be quite one sided when riding . I've got a lesson tomorrow but I am so frustrated I've waited 27 years for this horse and it's getting me down.
Just wanted a bit of a rant coz I will sort it out somehow but feel better for sharing:(

Is she still being turned out have you increased her food because its winter maybe worth getting the saddle checked again and teeth. Its not the first year of owning horses thats frustrating it still happens to me even now your not alone

I understand.

I also moved yards during the first few months of owning my mare and I went through three different saddlers before we finally got a saddle that she was happy with.

Frustrating times, but once both things were sorted it was soooooo much better. :)

First get her teeth checked then take a look at what she is getting fed - could be a case of spring high jinx ( very common IMO)

She is getting some turnout but the fields are so muddy she just stands about eating her bale of haylage. Will get her teeth and back checked as well. She is only getting a scoop of cool fibre and a 1/3 scoop of speedibeet. I might turn her out in the old arena tomorrow let her ave a bit of a play.

I would definitely have her saddle checked again, my mare is very fussy about the fit of her saddle and will let me know if its not spot on. Don't lose heart though, it's still early days, I'm sure you will get over this and have a fab time with her x

After all usual checks, id try giving her a quick lunge before you get on. get out the excess energy and you can see what sort of mood she's in today.

Is she only doing it when ridden? Have you tried lunging with tack on to see if you get the same reaction? The only reason i'm asking is I got my mare 16 months ago (1st horse at same age as you!) and after Christmas having had a saddle fitted by a highly recommended saddle fitter she had a full on rodeo episode. Got someone else to have a look at the saddle - too narrow (she is like a table), too low over her spine and just beyond the last rib. New saddle and never had a problem since!
