Sorry post no 3 in 2 days!!

Have been trying to get puppy to eat something, and she just wont. Only our chicken from last night.

However, I just made myself a tuna sandwhich, and she went mad at the smell! I thought it was just coz it was mine, so thought I'd test her, I got the cats fishy tin out and put it in a bowl identical to her's she loved it! However, only gave her a bit as I didn't know if it would be any good for her?

So what are the best, fishiest puppy foods? I'm going shopping in an hour, so grateful for any reccomendations xxxx

Didn't the breeder give you a few days pack of the food she's already been on to tide you over while pup finds her feet in her neew home? We always give a week's supply with our pups; you know me, always worrying about them, so I lkie them to be kept on the same food for a while cos everything else has changed and their stomachs will be upset naturally without new food to contend with. Can you not ring and find out what she was fed before?

At 10 weeks, we would still be feeding Puppy Chum with small Bite Mixer or a dry puppy food added, for 2 feeds and Weetabix for the other 2 and will change onto a more adult food when they have changed their teeth (about 16 - 18 weeks old) If it likes fishy foods, you could try Winalot Tuna, not sure if others make anything similar but don't whatever you do, feed cat food, it is far too high in protein for puppies. Although I'm not a fan of Chum (too many windy smells from it!

) the pups all seem to do well on it and it's no good using some obscure food that other 'new owner' people can't get hold of, that defeats the object!.

My Tibetan Terrier was a nightmare to feed... from the moment I got him until very recently. He's now nearly 18 months.

The only dog food I've found that he likes is James Wellbeloved Ocean Fish variety. it definitely smells fishy and he loves it! Honestly I never thought I'd see him leap on a bowl of dog food and eat everything in it, but he does with this stuff. I think they do a puppy version so that's what I'd recommend.

I prefer Chappie but any of the fishy ones are fine. If you are stuck with a large sack of dry food thats not going down well try a tiny drop of codliver oil in the dog bowl.....I dont know one canine that can resist it when its spilled on the tackroom floor!

She did, however, she said herself she wont eat it. She'll eat a tniy tiny bit out of your hand but thats it. This poor foster mummy has been doing this for the past few weeks!!! As a volunteer she obvioulsy didn't want to be spending a frotune on miss fussy!!!! (Cant blame her).

I'll look for the winalot then, thanks Pat. xx

polly wouldnt eat the first few days we had her, its nerves they just need time to get used to things. Thing is if they wont eat it you take it away - dont leave it lying around all day, they are either hungry or they're not. She is still on her 3 meals a day which she now eats quite happily - but if she dosent finish it it gets taken away and thats that until the next meal. we did this on the advice of our vet btw.

Try not to worry too much about the not eating

I had many sleepless nights over my lad and his reluctance to eat. Every other puppy I've had wolfed their food down, so when I got him and he wouldn't eat I was convinced he'd fade away completely. I tried every type of dog food on the market (actually the worst thing you can do!) and resorted to hand feeding him with cooked meats (again the worst thing you can do). He'd even turn his nose up at hand fed bits of ham and chicken.

This went on for months, then he went and broke his leg (another trauma!) and I was at my wits end.

But he obviously always ate enough to keep going as he always had loads of energy - hence the broken leg! - and was very healthy.

Now he's been on the well beloved for about three months and he's putting on weight for the first time ever. It's such a relief.

I also did the ten minute rule at first with the wellbeloved. Put his bowl down for ten minutes at the same time everyday. Any left over (some days the entire bowl) I took away and he didn't get any treats or extras until the next day when the bowl went back down. It's harder to do that when they're a puppy though as you know they have to eat in order to grow and develop properly.

One things for sure though, your puppy won't starve itself to death. Some love food, others will eat just what they need

Went to see if I could sniff out some smelly food, found the James Welbeloved stuff. she loves it!!!! She actually cleaned the bowl!!! There was only a small amount in it, but, it was empty in about a minute!!! Yay!

Now for the next meal where she wont eat! Grrr

Would you believe our pup was on mackerel, rice pud, scrambled eggs and evap milk for a while????? I find pedigree and the big brands were too rich for my hound. A small amount of fish a few times a week will do no harm whatsoever. Oily fish can cause tummy upsets as it is rich. Tuna in brine (tio the brine away) won't hurt but watch the protein levels if feeding a complete mix.

Actually pedigree chum is a cheaply made food, its classed with the "supermarket" lines. Its only able to charge that price as it has spent so much on advertising with apparent breeders etc using it. Even though they only use it as they get a years supply for doing the ad along with money!!

My lot are on beta food, they love it. I sometimes mix red sauce or scrambled egg in their dinner.

To encourage eating you could mix in a little chappie (a very good meat) along with the dried stuff and put it in the microwave for a short time (releases a meaty smell) and see how that goes.

My two cant resist eggs or cod liver oil, and both are brill for joints and skin

as a dog breeder I would not use anything apart fromHills, Scientific, Pro Plan or Royal Canin, and majority of puppy food is chicken, has its bland and wont upset there tummys, Fish can be a bit rich..

If you was going to give any tinned food, use some thing like Natures Diet, its all pure stuff and wont give them the runs and make sure its for puppies....

Puppies are meant to have puppie food to there at least 12 months old..

The James Wellbeloved is not a puppy in the fish...

whatever you do, do not feed Iams...

I am doing animal nutrition which includes exams with Hills, Pro Plan and Royal Canin and with all the big horse feeds...

Any help, just shout
