Hi all

Hoping to take my coblet to the hunt meet that is at my new livery yard in mid Dec. We moved to the yard at the end of Sept and at this point she was very fit - we had been out doing endurance and she could easily do 3-4hrs at a strong pace with very quick recovery.

Since we moved we have mainly hacked, and since the dark nights at weekends only. Do you think the weekend hacking only (1.5-2hrs Sat & Sun but not much fast work due to wet ground) is enough to have kept her fitness ticking over to do half a day (no jumping)? Due to work committments I can't do any more work with her Mon-Fri :( she is turned out for 12hrs, stabled overnight.

She is 15 - not been out hunting for a couple of years as she had a splint fracture but now fully mended. We've not jumped much though lately so won't be jumping her at the meet.

As the meet is on the yard I thought I could perhaps aim for a few hours and then hack her home? I'll take a map just in case! This is the only meet we'll do - as I know I won't be able to ride enough to do any others sadly (have a wedding to organise!).

Horses hold onto their fitness much better than us so I should think she will be fine, let her ease back if you feel her flagging and stop when she has had enough. Have a good day!

General rule of thumb was horses could keep their fitness for 6 weeks although I found last year when the hunters missed a week through snow the difference in fitness was noticeable. Just see how she goes!
