I've ridden horses for like Emmmmm ever. I've trained loads but I've never owned one that is like my latest boy... For weeks now I've been trying to teach my traddy cob flying changes ( I know I am mental but that's another story.) but he can leg yield in canter and do lots of lateral work and he does a super simple change etc so it seems a sensible??? Next step anyhow back to the point ... So for weeks I've been trying and for weeks nay months it's like he just simply doesn't even get it then on Wednesday (in the p***ing rain) I get a half change (front not back) but for that he got huge praise... And today we were doing them (properly straight and thru- I have witnesses) every time ... I've decided he's a bit thick but when he gets it he gets it ... He doesn't get better gradually he gets better in huge leaps ... Ho hum ... I'll have that little cob doing Grand Prix yet!!!

Sounds just like my boy !! I pop a jump pole on the floor on the centre line .. Canter on a 20m circle .. Bounce him a few stride.. Change over the pole .. Pat him and carry on .. I have to do things over and over till the penny drops .. Can't wait till I can pop poles down on the diagonal and do some 2 time changes :D I do think being able the shorten / bounce the canter is the key ..get them really using the hocks .. I too have a cob ( a welsh one ;) ) well done ..keep up the hard work ;)
