A friend of mine uses an english hackamore on her mare. I just wondered if anyone could give me some advice on how it should be fitted. To me it looks like it is currently too low as the noseband is sitting over the soft part of her nose. Saying that when I tried searching the internet for info all the piccies that I could find they seemed all to be sitting that low. Now I always believed they should be fitted high up above the top of the false nostril but all the pictures would suggest I am not right. Also how tight should it be - does the 2 fingers width under the noseband rule apply for hackamores as well as conventional nosebands?
Many thanks,AJ

The hackamore should not be touching the soft part of the nose! Ideally they should be where the normal caveson noseband is fitted.

The whole point of the hackamore is to work on the poll not the nose!

I jumped my mare in a german hackamore and it was in the same place as her caveson on her normal pelham bridle.

Need to be fitted as high as possible without grazing the cheek bones when it comes into action.... the pic above is correct.... think you can just make out the noseband position.

Maybe be able to see it a wee bit better in this photo?? It does have a big sheepskin cover on nose though but you get the idea!

Thanks everyone, you have confirmed just what I thought. I conveyed this to my friend who thinks its an excellent excuse to go bridle shopping as her current bridle doesn't have enough holes to put it up any more. I'm sure her horse is going to be so much happier when its adjusted correctly.
Many thanks, AJ
