Okay maybe a silly question.....
When fitting a NS bit is it correct to have the stamp (writing/lettering on the bit) on the outside and obviously the correct way up (so its readable) once in the horses mouth?! :o been looking at it too long and its gone funny in my head! :o:o am sure its right!!
Her lips do not cover the hole where the rings are loose and there are a few wrinkles and seems to be sitting in the right place.
The horse is a cob with a fairly small mouth so therefore has a thinner mouthpiece - its a NS lozenge bit, also shes sort of between sizes in bridles - some cob bridles are just not big enough - usually the browbands are too tight or the cheekpieces too short. She has a full size bridle on in the pic and although its on the top hole for the cheekpieces, everywhere else it fits better than the cob size.
Does it look okay? also do you think the noseband looks a little low?? (just realized it isnt done up in the pic but its where it roughly sits!!)
sorry am sounding very stupid now but mostly on my own with my horse and no horsey people about for 2nd opinions!!
However i do have a lesson booked next week so will also seek the opinion of my instructor :)

All my NS bits have an arrow. It should be pointing forward when the bit is in the mouth if that helps.

Yes it all points forwards and folds neatly together when its in - i thought i was right! its like when you think of a word for too long and it becomes alien in your head! :D i had the same moment with this bit

Yep looks a bit tight to me I'd op for half an inch bigger at least.

This is my lad in his NS I prefer them bigger rarther than smaller, the thought of pinching lips makes me shudder lol!

This is a 5" - how much bigger did you need to go? not sure whether to order the 5.25 0r the 5.5?!
May go for the smaller ring size too - this is the 70mm going to try the 55mm

Hi there - would say that bit looks a little snug but see what it's like when you take a contact up. I got my NS from the horse bit bank and I phoned them to check on the fit - they said that you need to have 1/4 inch each side of the mouth once a contact is taken up. The bit can look different when there is no contact and reins are just hanging loose. I had to go up a 1/4 inch from my boy's usual size if that helps (NS go up in 1/4 sizes which is helpful!)

The 5 1/2 inch NS starter I have borrowed initially looked very snug to me. However I got YO (who I borrowed it from and previously worked in tack shop) to check and she said fit was ok if almost a bit big and my dressage instructor also advised to get a 5 1/4 instead. I wasn't convinced (am used to seeing traditional loose ring snaffles/fulmers etc) until I took photos of her ridden and realised that it looked way too big so have now ordered a 5 1/4 as suggested. Double check before you swop yours by seeing fit whilst ridden as others have suggested!
