it really depends on the type of horse you have really and watch shape he is, my 17hh irish draught is in a medium fitting 17.5" ideal event, they are lovely saddles and tend to fit a lot of horses at least thats what my saddle fitter says, its frustrating as all saddle companies are very slightly different in the widths of their saddles even just by a fraction of an inch which can make fitting a saddle very difficult. I would suggest you try to get in touch with a local saddle fitter and ask their opinions

This is very true - my Anglo Arab 15.2 has a 17" jump Impala med wide and a 17.5" dressage Tonisha!

They fit a lot of horses because they have a huge range of trees available, I have used them for over 20 years mainly on Arabs. They are super quality and dont break the bank. They are quite common second hand so Id ask a saddler to come out.

Oh dear, your reply has probably just encouraged me to part with money!
The saddle in question is a medium wide and I would be pretty much buying blind, although obviously getting it fitted by an experienced saddle fitter. It is an incredible bargain and if it doesn't fit then hopefully would be able to resell without losing anything. I was thinking Harvey might need a wide, but hopefully not.

Brilliant saddles - I had 2 grandees and a Jessica, and they could be re-flocked to fit the horses whatever state of fitness. I had the medium fit for all of them, it seemed more generous than other makes.
I swapped one of the grandees for a Barnsby dressage saddle and it was the the biggest mistake I ever made with saddles.
I have only had one horse they didn't fit with a bit of tweaking, and she was a very flat backed (very strong musclewise) downhill horse with a high wither, but she has been a nightmare for any saddle to fit!

I have an Ideal Jessica. The woman who I bought it it for her last mare. Then she got a new gelding and had the tree changed to make it fit. Then sold it to me for my last mare and it fitted beautifully and now I am having it altered for my current mare. Amazing saddles they are. I feel so secure and confortable in it and my current mare loves it it frees off her shoulders beautifully.
Now to make it fit.. again :D I would do anything to make it fit her, beautiful saddle!

I have a medium wide 17.5'' in brown looking for a new home ;)

Saddler told me that the are built on a flatter tree, they also tend to have a good spine clearance too due.

Lovely to ride in, I'm looking for second hand 17'' XW if anyone knows of one in the Yorkshire area. :)
