Check the correct length after the martingale has been attached. When the horse is standing with his head in the correct position, put your hand on the rings and lift it up. As a rough guide it should just reach as far as the throat. The buckle of the neck-strap should be on the left side of the horse's neck. It should fit so that it will admit the width of a hand at the withers. To keep the girth-loop neat and safe, one runner should be positioned immediately behind the buckle and the other next to the girth
The reins should be threaded through the rings, so that the rings can run freely up and down the reins. The reins should be fitted with "stops" between the rings and the bit, to prevent the rings getting caught over the hook billets of the rein, or any part of the bit.
Thank you. I've got it far too loose then. Still better than too tight. Rings reach to the throat (I thought I'd heard withers somewhere, and couldn't figure out how that worked)I just want him to wear it for a fun ride as last year he stuck his head in the air and also gives me a neckstrap, but want him to be used to wearing it first.
Also forgot to say that the strap through the legs again like the neck strap should be able to fit 1 hand width. To saggy & they can get a leg caught. Neckstraps you cant beat them.
The wither thing is for standing martigales though I always prefer to go to the throat as horses have different necks some long some short!
Have fun on your fun ride!

the other method of fitting is to take the rings towards the withers and they should be about a hands width short of the wither. However all these methods are an inexact science. if in doubt get someone to watch when you are riding, if it is interefering with your contact when horse has head in controllable position it is too short, too long and you find out the hard way usually!!
