I`ve been away from riding lessons for a couple of years now due to a recurring
knee injury.I am just wondering what exercises people recommend for building
up thigh, calf and lower back muscles?

skating is very good for this - you need to keep your knees bent but it is low impact, and it is great for the lower back too. however if you have a problem with your knee it depends whether falling over would make it worse, and if wearing knee pads (you get them for rollerblading) would be enough to prevent it. anyway both ice skating and rollerblading has quite a risk of wrist and head injuries, so wrist guards and helmet are also recommended :)
