Do you prefer rugs with fixed necks or detachable necks, and why?

Do you find that detachable necks gape where they meet the rug, and let the rain etc in?

What is best for horses with big chunky necks - fixed or detachable?

DETACHABLE........... I find the fixed rub the bottom of the mane as they lay heavy!

I have a warmblood and he has the detachable and it never rubs or leaks, they have an over lap so it doesnt let the rain in!

Detachable definitely. He only wears the neck cover if it's very cold, or if it's raining - I prefer him not to wear a neck cover when the weathers moderate and not too cold to climatise him a bit more.

I have a rug with a detatchable neck and it does not gape or let the rain in (my horse is not a cob, but a fairly chunky ID), but it does rub a section of mane off after a while, so when it needs replacing I might go for a fixed neck.

I like detachable as there is the option to take off in dry weather. i haven't had any problems with rain getting in gap, it stops the usual wet bit round withers and top of shoulder that you get with no neck cover.

Detachable, detachable, detachable. You've got the choice then - if its a lovely sunny day or you haven't clipped you can keep the neck off.

Also the rubbing thing - those attached ones do seem to take the mane off at the wither! Never had this problem with detachable ones!

Detachable defo. You've almost go 2 different rugs then depending on the weather. I haven't had and problems with rain getting in but hey if a little bit did they'd be ok.
IMO attached ones put pressure on the withers, they do with my high withered WB anyway.

I've got both - heavyweight t/o is fixed and fits perfectly and doesn't rub at all.

Middle weight t/o is detachable as I prefer the option to take the neck cover off in milder weather and this one I'm not so happy with. The neck does slide foreward and lets the rain in at the bottom and it does rub his mane at the base of his neck. That could be more to do with the make of this particular rug though as other detachables I've used have been fine and I will be replacing this one as soon as I can.

I had a detachable 2 year ago, i was dissapointed with it to be honest, the zip kept coming down. The velcro which covered it got mud on it so came un done then the zip got mud in and broke. They had only just came out when i had mine maybe they have improved.

I always have detachable (if I have a neck at all), but then my horse has a short, chunky neck so I need lots of adjustment.

I once borrowed a rambo hoody fly rug with a fixed neck and it looked hilarious (Nora Batty's stockings affect).

I prefer fixed necks, they seem to fit better on my horses, i have never had a problem with mane being rubbed.

I have found a few of the horses at work in the morning with the detachable hood over their head, so have been put off the detatchable ones! But i suppose it depends on the design of the rug.

I prefer detachable necks as it gives you more options, like others have said. That said- I absolutely detest clip-on neck covers!

I live in quite a windy area and neck covers that blow back, exposing the horse's lower neck are a waste of time. Horseware (Rhino/Rambo) and Premier Equine have long double sided velcro attachments and they work brilliantly.

I won't even consider any rug with D-ring attachments. I've tended not to bother with combo rugs as I have been told they're worse for rubbing the mane out.
