Fixed Peaks for XC

reading this thread on the be website has lead me to believe i could wear my KEP hat for xc , is this correct ?

You can't use a fixed peak for XC - at least not PC, RC or affilliated. If you land on your face the peak will snap your head back and you'll break your neck.

There are some hat types with a "fixed" peak which detaches on impact - but so far as I am aware they are not permiited for XC here.

Obviously you can wear what you like schooling - and possibly at some unaffilliated events. But bear in mind that fixed peak hats are banned for a reason!

Interesting - it seems harder to keep you with hat standards these days than years ago. I ended up with a Champion CPX3000 - this claims:

Constructed using a lightweight shell with flexible peak.

PAS 015 1998
BSEN1384 1996

It looks like a traditional styled velvet riding hat, and although I only just back into things I might like to do more as I regain my riding fitness - what will I be able to do in this hat please?

Do not like fixed peaks mini was given one and I do not ever allow her to ride in it !!!

I agree with Ian stark on it , that they are dangerous and look horrid

I've ridden in both over the years. If I wear a skull cap I must have a cover for it, because they just don't suit me without. I've fallen countless times in both types. Maybe I'm just a bit vain, but I do love the look of a classic hat. Mind you I thought all the peaks were collapsable these days, is this not the case?

It's not the case, hence subject of this thread. You'd have to be quite unlucky for the accident in question to happen but there is still the chance and I support the ruling on it. Fixed peaks do look nice or at least 'tidier' but certainly for xc they would look out of place regardless!

Back Riding Again - you have a current standard (although not top standard) fixed peak hat. You can show in it, do dressage and show jump in it. There is no rules about what you wear at home, hacking, hunting or sponsored rides. I don't know if le Trec or Endurance allow fixed peak hats. But you cannot compete XC, and you may not even be allowed on the course to school - I know the ones around us require skull caps.

I must admit for me I do have a fixed peak hat - although it is one of those where the peak is flexible and detaches easily. But I get on a horse at most once a year and that much reluctantly as I broke my back a while back and it is very painful to ride now.

My daughter has a skull cap with a wide range of covers for every eventuality including some clever ones which make her hat look as much like a fixed peak as it can. Having seen the statistics and read the articles I would not have her in anything else.

I fractured my skull on a fixed peak when I was 11 (long time ago now!). Still remember the headache and concussion ..would never ride in one now.

I used to xc in a fixed peak as that was all i had was up to safety standards. A friend did the same and had a nasty injury. I found the money for a skull before the next outting.

I soke to Ian Beattie of Parkgate (?) hats at Hickstaed this year & he told me that it is only PC who do not allow peaks on hats. All modern hats are now made with peaks that crumple & absorb impact. He is also on the BE safety committee, so he knows the rules inside out.
So, you ARE allowed peaked hats now for XC except PC

My fixed peak broke my nose when I fell off showjumping. Very painful. The next day I went and bought myself and my 6yo daughter skull caps with covers (a groovy one for her, black for me) and I'd never sit on a horse or allow her to without one now.
Safety over style any day for me.

Or just not been very stroppy and unnecessary above- you'll get a bad reputation. You were at the PC area eventing we were at- we only worked out it was you when we looked up your number as you'd been so stroppy at the scoreboards!

I wouldn't go xc in a fixed peak. In fact I've not ridden in a fixed peak hat since the days of hats held on with elastic. Always a skull cap, but I am going to buy a velvet hat for dressage and showing soon, I'll wear a skull for everything else though.

That's definitely the case with PC and RC.

Anyway.... What's the point of a fixed peak that break on impact? I'd be really annoyed if I had a little fall, smashed the peak but the rest of the hat was fine!

Good grief, Gembo, that thread is nearly two years old. It doesn't matter if it says all hats must be purple or three feet tall or God knows what, there have been two subsequent rulebooks since! The current rulebook itself requires for XC that: '4.1 All classes: Protective Headwear with cover.' Ergo a requirement for skull caps / non-fixed peaks is implicit but phone BE to check (or in the time this thread has been up you could have created one there yourself rather than 'grring' at those who presumably don't work there...!).

So true. And there's nothing more shameful than your hat cover flying off mi-way round and you have to finish the rest of the course looking like a duffus!

Personally I wouldnt wear a fixed or collapsable peaked hat, Ive heard they can also break your nose! OP, why not just buy a skull hat, there's some cheap ones about nowadays.

HS1s are very good, worth the price tag!
