New horse arrived at our yard last weekend - owners not been up for a full week and they said that there is no point "just coming to see him" as he is on full livery - i cant get my head round this - but you would think the owner would check him at least in his first week - but then i am sad and sentimental

It was well gone 11 today when they rocked up, horse not been seen to at all by then as he is the owners responsibility on a weekend and he had had no hay and water when i had left the barn at 7.30 this morn - but after being shot down on here before I wont interfere

The took horse out for a 3 and a half hour hack - they seamed really happy to tell me he has not been ridden for 8 or 9 weeks and they are going to do the same tomorrow !

Poor thing was dripping with sweat, head between his knees, and looking pretty sorry for himself -when i left tonight - poor thing - it makes my blood boil.

When I was younger I would just fix a smile and not say anything. Now, however, as I'm an old hag, I would tell them politely that their behaviour is unacceptable and detrimental to the well-being of the horse. Smile and leave. If they don't like it, hard cheese, but at least they have been educated.

Oh dear :( If he is on full livery, except at the weekend, could the YO/YM not have a word with them. The thing that gets my goat is that it is likely they will get away with it and the horse, while not happy will survive, those of us who do take care of our horses end up with all sorts of problems. I'm sure there is a moral to that, but not sure that I want to see what it is :)

That's nothing I was once on a place where the owner would turn up as late as 1 to 2pm to see to their horse at a weekend. That was on livery too on weekdays so had had nothing to eat since around 4 to 5pm previous night! I guess what pissed me off though was that the yard owner would talk about it but said nothing to the owner and even later considered them to be a friend even though this person told nothing but lies and made up excuses about not doing this that and tother!
Have also seen very overweight horses that were being given hard feed ( didn't need it), hardly ridden then taken out on a hack only to return dripping. Should have been clipped to help really, hard feed removed and regular work. Sometimes I feel it real hard to keep mouth shut and I know a couple of times in the past I have let rip. I think it is because for me the welfare and health of the horse is paramount and having worked so hard and waited so long to get my own horses it makes me mad to see horses being taken for granted, neglected or in some cases numpties looking after them!

I have my own place thank god but I am with classicalfan you are no more liked for holding your thoughts or being nicey nicey, so speak your mind it sometimes works and sometimes just shames them in to doing it properly.
