Flash and Pelham? Would you?

Mine has a mexican grakle to go with his useless jointed pelham. And I ride in spurs. And a martingale.

Shall we tick off how many 'cardinal sins of HHO' I am committing?! ;) :D

Fany is also ridden in spurs and martingale to hack at present, she needs them, so she has them. Cappy would die of shock if you used a crop on him, let alone spurs. Again suit what you use to the horse, not what other people think. Too many people judge without understanding or even enquiring about the circumstances.

Hmm.. well it does change the action... and it still negates the the true action of a pelham which then means it's no longer a pelham... oh well. Nevermind, just the way I weigh things up and I am known as a bit of a purist. Albeit one that doesn't ride in just a snaffle...... whoops :D

Anyway, spottedcat, I don't want to argue, I hope we can agree to disagree :)

We could just call it something else then. How about a 'shanked jointed stopping curb'?! ;)

There are loads of bits out there which are called something which makes no real sense - take the dutch 'gag' - which has a head raising action and basically no poll pressure at all, as opposed to a 'true' gag, which does have poll pressure and works in a completely different way.

Who cares if it changes the action? If the horse goes well and is happy in it what does it matter? Each to their own!

Better a strong bit with a mild hand than hauling and yanking on a snaffle imo!

Absolutely agree! Too often see someone hauling on a horse's mouth, then proudly announcing their horse is in a snaffle! Better a stronger bit and a gentler hand than vice versa.

Agreed, which is why whenever my cob goes out in company he either has a kimblewick or pelham.

Um excuse me... I was having a discussion with Spotted if you don't mind and we were of the same conclusion, now butt out :p :D

and everyone else who've just jumped on the wagon, it's ok, I wasn't having a go at people who don't ride in just a snaffle - I am a pelhamite/kimblewicker myself if it's all the same... so stop beating me up!

I personally wouldnt use both together, I can see how both curb chain and flash strap can sit in the chin groove together while inactive, but when riding the chain in my mind must be displaced when coming into action putting pressure somewhere other than where it should be.
That said, to the people using them its your choice and from what you say works for uou.

Another of these 'I wouldn't....it's wrong....'..

If it works for someone else, who the hell has the right to say it should NOT be used?

People should wind their necks in and mind their own business.

It REALLY pisses me off.

just have to ask-when you say dutch gag do you mean the bit with 3 rings ? it seems to have poll pressure on my mare, if she's trying to p off and i'm holding her her head comes down.
agree with DS though...we ride our cob in a snaffle and a flash for schooling but he needs a pelham out hacking and he's fine in the curb. if you're using a flash with the pelham, and it works for your horse and the curb isn't moving and causing them pain then i'm assuming it's alright!

am i right in thinking most horses need different bits for situations?? maybe not actually but it isn't down to poor schooling...my welsh D will school in a french link with no noseband or martingale all day but out hacking it's in your best interests for her to wear a gag and a martingale :D
as other's have said, gentle hands-gentle bit. harsh hands-harsh bit. i'd rather ride her loosely in a gag hacking than hold her the whole time in a snaffle

Couldn't agree with you more!!!!!!!!!!

How ironic this thread should be posted.

Today at Gatcombe me and my mum were watching a top eventer schooling her horse in preparation for tomorrow (said horse looked amazing). The horse was wearing a flash and pelham with roundings and I jokingly said to my mum "I bet horse and hound would have something to say about that..."
