Flax Bedding

yes you can deep litter i think cost depends on where you are and how much you buy friends at my yard buy in bulk and pad about £5 a bale.
They deep litter their bed to an extent in that they only take the wet out once a week possibly twice if teh horse anre in a lot.
It seems to be good if your horse is particularly wet or dirty

Olny if you use enough bales to top it upotherwise it becomes a pissy mess.

Hi I'm using Jopack (similar to equisorb I think) and on a deep litter system with a mare who is tidy with dung - all along back wall ! but VERY wet. The bed has been down for 4 weeks now - just take out dung twice a day & small wet patches if they come to the surface when raking to remove any hay & put in about 1 bale a week (a little each day or two) & it's been fab - no smell, nice & warm & best of all she can't drag it around to get through to the concrete.

I'd recommend it to anyone !!

I have both mine on it. I deep litter through the week and take out the wet on a weekend. I only add one bag a week as it soon mounts up. My mare is quite clean, but my gelding is revolting and can be quite wet. and when I do the big dig(!) I only actually take two wheelbarrows out.

Am seriously thinking of switching for a few reasons, one of them being that my gelding is very wet. Am currently on woodchips. Will I need to clear out all woodchips or can I add in the flax and slowly clear out the woodchips?

Just to add to this, my grey mare is on flax, tho not deep litter - we tried it in despair as she was always filthy on straw, both in terms of the state of the bed and of her.
She was too disgusting to ride, with the result that I was always having to wash her which made her really grumpy.
I do keep the flax pretty clean, but she rarely has stable stains on her as it soaks up all the urine by the floor, leaving a nice clean layer on top.
She also removes mud from her head and ears by rolling in it after she's been turned out. Perfect!

I use Royal Span, It's a flax, shavings mix. My pony is absolutely rotten in his stable. He used to eat the straw and just leave me the dirty bits, and when he was on shavings it was soaked constantly and messy. Royal Span is so absorbent, our whole yard are now on it! and it's only £5.20 per bag.
